Just last week my computer started experiencing boot problems where it'd power-up (fans, HDD spinning) then switches itself of again and repeats this a few times until it finally boots up. Sometimes it never boots and seems to get stuck in a loop so I have to use the main switch on the PSU or pull the plug.
When I am able to get into the BIOS I check the settings under 'MB Intelligent Tweaker (M.I.T.)'. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS5. I'm greated by a message in a red box that says: 'The System has experienced boot failures because of overclocking or changes of voltages. Last settings in this page may not concide with current H/W stats.'
After many tries at changing settings and rebooting it turned out the setting 'CPU Host Clock Control' was causing it. I changed it from 'Enabled' to 'Disabled' leaving it locked at 266 MHz. This stopped it from booting up and switching off mutliple times but now everytime it starts up from cold it will turn on then switch off once and then on again and continue to boot as normal. Checking the BIOS again and the message no longer appears.
I have recently upgraded my RAM but this was a couple weeks ago. It now has 4 x Corsair Dominator GT PC2-8500 1066MHz 2GB modules (8GB). I got the first 4GB set for a good deal so decided to by another matching pair. I'm planning to upgrade to Windows 7 soon and still on XP 32bit at the moment so not all the RAM is in use. The system has not experienced any crashes/BSOD since the upgrade. The CPU is a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Rev. G0 @ 2.40GHz. It has been running at 3.0GHz beforehand for almost 2 years.
I'm going to run Memtest86+ at some point to determine if the RAM is faulty or not. It'd be nice to solve the boot problem if possible.
