Boot Problems

Hi there,

I posted a thread recently asking about a problem I was having with my PC crashing, following a clicking sound. The advice I received was that it was one of my hard drives on it's way out, which just certified my original feelings. So I ordered a new HDD, and have just this morning replaced it with the one I believe was the problem. Because the crashing was quite random, I haven't really had a chance to test it, but that isn't the main problem any more.

When the PC first crashed, I started having a problem where when it would freeze, I would hold down the power button to turn the PC off (the only way to do this), but if I tried to turn it on again immediately I would be met with long beeps from my case a few seconds apart, and these would just continue on forever. By waiting a minute or two, I could then turn the power on and it would start as normal. However, after installing the new hard drive I had hoped this might go away, but it didn't. So to try and fix the problem I tried flashing the BIOS of my motherboard, which has apparently tipped it over the edge. It will now not boot whatsoever, no matter how long I leave it. I have tried disconnecting all the possible components (sound card, graphics card, RAM, hard drives) but still the long beeps await me.

My system specs are this:

AMD FX-55, HIS X850 XT PE, 1GB OCZ PC3200 RAM, DFI LanParty nF4 Ultra-D, 74GB WD Raptor, (New) Seagate Barracuda 320GB, and my case is a Thermaltake Shark.

If more information is needed I will try to offer what I can.

Thanks, Simon.

Quick Update:

I remember seeing some Debug LEDS on the motherboard, so I checked which ones stayed on and cross referenced this to the manual.

3 out of the 4 LEDs stayed on, and this is the key the manual gives:

4 LEDs On - System Start-Up
3 LEDs On - CPU Deteced
2 LEDs On - DRAM Detected
1 LED On - VGA Detected
0 LEDs On - System Boot-Up

Therefore, with 3 being on, the system has started up, the CPU has been detected, so there must be a problem with the DRAM.

Checked the DFI website about the beeping and found this:

Long Beeps Short Beeps Booting Status
-- 1 Booting Successfully
-- 2 CMOS setup error
1 -- Memory module error - This is what is happening, so it is most definitely a memory problem, but what memory problem exactly?

I have used this computer for 2+ years I think, and I remember a while back I had a similar problem, fixed by flashing the BIOS. I can't imagine the RAM would suddenly stop working.

Final Edit: Now believe it is the RAM that has died I guess. I tried some older RAM and the system works fine now.
