Bootable memory stick.?

Hey, hoping someone can give me some information on how to make my USB kingston 2gig pen drive bootable with windows vista or xp to allow me to install an operating system onto a new hard drive etc with it.

Is more difficult than you think, i dont think you can just copy the boot files onto the disk, i used a HP utility and then copied the win98 boot disk utilities to allow it to boot into dos, i expect linux is easier.
