Do i have to do anything to my USB hard drive to make it bootable? i ask because i've seen the option in the bios to boot from it and i'd like to stick ghost on it so i can disconnect my CD drive (causing problems)

(google toolbar spell check screwed up formatting sorry)

Lol okay. i will give it ago shortly. and don't ask. Google toolbar spell checker thingy went terribly wrong and I'm using the WYSIWYG editor and yeah.. lol how strange

acronis can load itself onto a usb stick for you, it's better than ghost, period (as an american would say :p )

Cool will bear that in mind.

however i've just had another idea... since i dont have a DVD drive in this computer any more i could iso vista x64 on the lappy. shoot the iso over to this computer and lump in on the usb hard drive and try and boot from it. but its having none of it - any ideas on how to get it working?

You need to burn the ISO file to a dvd. Your PC won't be able to boot from a Vista ISO. It needs to be burned to a DVD for your PC to install from it.

Sorry wasnt very clear in my post.. i wanted to mount it on the USB hard drive and BOOT from it. anyway its all sorted now.

gave up and stole a mates DVD-RW for a few hours.. Vista x64 runs like a dream although i could probably do with a tad more ram. thanks for yer helps people

Yeah thats what I thought you meant. I don't think there is a way of getting an ISO onto a bootable USB disk in such a way that you can boot from the USB disk as if it were a normal Vista dvd.

Yeah certainly dosent seem that way after trying for 2 hours!

I've decided that at some point when i've got some cash im just gonna put £20 aside for a all in one dual layer +/- dvd/cd-rw ram thingy bobby jobbie. bit silly its my own computer and im having to botch everything lol
