My new iMac has Lion which means it doesn't officially support XP or Vista, only 7. I currently have 7 installed via boot camp. would it be possible to install Vista over 7 and then use the drivers for 7 on Vista as their basically the same O/S with some tweaks and a different GUI?

Thank you.

I don't mean just the layout I mean the entire GUI, the taskbar, explorer, etc. I know a lot of people prefer 7 to Vista but I'm not one of them, I just don't like any of the things that are different between the two O/S's.

There is simply not a facepalm big enough for what you just said.

UPDATE:

Good news people, after much scanning online I discovered that you can install XP over the 7 partition then use the drivers from the Leopard version of boot camp, so I went with my plan of installing Vista over the 7 partition then using the 7 drivers and everything works perfectly :D

Edit: the Apple installation setup.exe file in the root of the drivers did refuse to run as it wasn't Windows 7 so I had to run the driver installers myself.

Well im sorry I don't like any of the changes they made, but I just don't, imo 7 was a step further in the wrong direction not an improvement, yes it made some things simpler for noobs but in doing so it made many more things harder/laborious for power users and some of the additions are just plain annoying.

Because I prefer the GUI to 7's.

You need psychological help.

Even if it did look better, everything else about Vista is a steaming pile of awfulness. The WDDM/DWM implementation is 99% of the problems with Vista. Now if you chose to run Windows Server as a workstation I'd look more favourably upon it...

As to whether it'll work, that depends on the model of the Mac.

Oh please, the reason most people hated Vista when it launched was the same reason most people hated XP when it launched, because it ran like a dog on current hardware, With 7 all MS did was wait for hardware to catch up then re-release Vista with a bunch of tweaks/updates and a new GUI (the same thing they did when they reworked 2K as XP).

Windows 7 is not faster than Vista and it is no more stable, the only real world difference is the way it looks (which I hate) and minor changes to the way it works (most of which I find annoying).

True but basically is 7 works then Vista will, the newer ones don't officially support XP/Vista but like I said you can just just use the 7 drivers in Vista as they are essentially the same O/S like 2K/XP were.

It isn't minor changes it was a huge change in the background most of it you didn't see. I can understand your opinion but Windows 7 is faster than Vista, it is more stable than Vista.

I skipped Vista and went to Windows 7 but then changed to osx.

Obviously but as far as the myth of it being a completely different O/S goes it was merely an revision of Vista, Its technically just NT 6.1 (like 2K being 5, XP being 5.1 and Vista being 6) but they decided to call it 7 to distance it form Vista. The changes in the foreground though are minor, some are subtle but I haven't seen any that I would call an improvement (I used 7 for 3 months on my main PC before going back to Vista and I run 7 on my laptop because its only for Lanpartys anyway so doesn't bother me due to low usage)

No offence intended, but the facts say different on both counts.

That's so incorrect I just facepalmed. Not going to discuss this further with someone that has irrational GUI OCD and seemingly knows nothing about the hidden bits of Windows.

Magic out.

It's just terrible compared to it; interface wise, and performance wise...
