Booting a PC game caused PC to turn off, won't turn on with GPU connected

Hi all,

I opened a game from the desktop by double clicking the icon as usual, as soon as I did that the PC turned off and wouldn't turn back on. I tested the CMOS and it didn't work. I then tested the memory and it still wouldn't boot.

I then disconnected the power cables from the GPU (Zotac 1080Ti) but left the GPU connected to the MOBO, the PC booted but as soon as the power went on it looked like there was a split second of fire coming from the GPU and smoke started appearing, this was for a split second (I then turned everything off straight away).

I then disconnected the GPU completely and the PC boots up fine using the onboard GPU.

Now, any idea what happened to the GPU to cause it to power off the PC and why it started to catch fire?

Also could it potentially be the PSU that's faulty? maybe it wasn't giving the GPU enough power or giving it too much, although the game didn't even launch so not sure.

Any solutions I can apply myself? bit worried here! Cheers!
