The motherboard is question is

Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L iG31 Socket 775.

With the stock cooler everything boots up fine, but when I attach my Thermaltake Big Typhoon and switch the computer on nothing happens. I've checked the connections numerous times and everything is (to the best of my knowledge) as it should be.

The only difference I can see is the stock cooler fan is 4 pin and the Big Typhoon fan is 3 pin going into the 4 pin slot on the motherboard. Would/should/could this be making a difference. The Big Typhoon worked fine on my old Asus P5B Deluxe before that died.

Saw your post in the wrong thread Stulid about the board not booting for safety because no RPM is detected. Am I right that the 4th pin is what lets the motherboard control fan speed etc?

Considering the price I'll just buy a new 4 pin fan and give it a shot. Cheers.

Then the board could be refusing to boot as it cant detect a rpm reading.

Can you check the fan works on another machine? or use the stock cooler to power the PC up and connect this Typhoon to another header?
