Built my new system, booted and worked perfect for a day, then next day windows failed to boot. Everything appeared to turn on but no video output. Figured windows corrupted, so pulled out the ssd and booted - video worked straight away. Repaired windows install and all worked fine for another day.

Today same issue - eveything turns on but no vid output
Tried pulling ssd out again but nothing.

Tried different monitors, tried pulling out gpu and going from mobo dvi but nothing. Not sure what to try now.

Specs 4790k gtx 980 gigabyte ud5h-bk hyperx savage 16gb.

Nothing is overclocked. Temps never above 55c on cpu and 70c on gpu.
 
Evga 850 gold. Crucial mx 100 ssd.

I didn't update the bios because everthing seemed to be running fine when I set everything up.

simple enough... take the gpu out... and use onboard graphics to boot into windows via safe mode (F8 for win 7, Ctrl + F8 for win 8) and download the file there onto a pendrive and then install via bios...

I'm not getting any video out from onboard either.

As far as I can tell there's nothing wrong with the cabling. I guess ill consider trying the cmos when I get hone, but would that really affect video output? Isn't it also risky?
 
I just got home from work, and the machine has been sitting off at the mains all day. Opened it up, checked all the cables (nothing seemed amiss), booted and straight into windows no problem.

So i'm assuming for now I might have accidentally messed the wires up (Although I didn't touch the cables at all between fixing it last time and it not booting this time).

Either way, is it still wise to update my BIOS anyway? I've always been told 'Don't update BIOS unless you need to'.
 
Eugh, I just restarted to attempt to flash the BIOS and i'm having the same issue again; there's no video output.

Ok this is weird. It seems my machine will only boot if I turn the power supply itself, or the mains off, between booting.

I have been having a very similar problem with same motherboard.. :(
I have same Cpu, same amount of memory but different make, and the rest of the components are different
What bios were you on, and what bios have you flashed too??

I don't know what Bios I was on; it was whatever the default one was on the board. I flashed to the F6 version on the gigabyte support page.
 
Ok so, not fixed. I'm still having strange stuff happen when booting.

It appears that the machine still needs to be powered off at the PSU itself in order to boot correctly. When booting, I get no video signal whilst booting (so no BIOS splash), then video returns for the 'loading windows' splash and audio, then it loses video again for 10 seconds, then returns for the login screen.

I'm wondering if there may actually be an issue with my graphics card. I noticed that the fans never seemed to be spinning; i've never had high temps, even in game (62c max). The info sheet included with the card said not to worry if the fans aren't spinning, or only one is spinning, but I downloaded MSI afterburner and set the fans to 100%, and even then only one fan is rolling.

I think your suffering from cold boots,or might need more memory controller voltage for 16gb of ram,for now test with just 8gb of ram installed and see if it still plays up

As for gpu fans I think its meant for one fan to stop till it reaches a certain temp then it kicks in,not sure though

I thought this too, but I would have at least thought if I manually set the card to 100%, it would go to 100%. I've emailed MSI about it.

It does appear though when in game, even when at low temps, both fans are running. I set a manual fan curve instead of the default auto, and my temps aren't even touching 45c anymore. Which is interesting because MSI responded and said (In obviously non-native English) "The work modes of fans is decideed by the graphics card'bios.When the temparature of GPU is below 60 degree centigrade,only a fan is working and another is still."

Both times it crashed about 10 seconds after exiting a game, if that has any relevance.
