Booting laptop and beeps

Have just started to use a laptop but does not appear to have beeps on booting. Also when connecting to net via the modem none of the usual noises are heard? Is the speaker silenced to make it more pleasant for surrounding people when using in public type places?

My laptop doesn't beep on bootup either. I think a lot of maufacturers have taken it out with their custom bios.

As for no modem sound, go into the sound control and there will be a slider that says modem or phone line. Slide this up a bit and/or take the tick out of mute.
