'BOOTMGR is missing' (plus broken SSD?) Please Read.

Okay, so my computer was running fine yesterday evening, but when I tried to put the computer into sleep mode, it done what it had to, then immediately turned itself back on. I try again, same thing. So I hit shutdown and the computer froze up, then I got a blue screen. Can't remember what the issue stated was as I figured I'd be able to turn the PC back on and look at it in more depth.

So I go to turn the PC on later, and I get the message telling me 'BOOTMRG is missing.' I think I recall having this before, and it was a simple fix - just repair Windows with the Windows 7 disc. But here's the thing, upon trying to repair the installation, it kinda told me that it couldn't find the installation that needed repairing. So I went into the BIOS and noticed that the SSD isn't being recognized (nothing showing up, and it's what I have Win 7 on).

So, long story-short: is this looking like a broken SSD? I'm about to see if all the sata cables are connected properly, but if so, any other ideas what the issue could be?

I have had the exact same problem! What I had to do was keep restarting, it eventually booted but in the end i had to do a full format.. however since its an SSD im guessing all you have on there is windows and your other files are spread across different hard-drives? In which case, reinstalling shouldn't be a problem.

Thats just what I had to do anyway, not sure what went wrong maybe corrupt data somewhere in windows.

EDIT: If the SSD was broken you probably wouldn't be able to pick up in the bios or installation process so this definitely sounds like a windows issue.

I could try that. But first, is there any way of making the computer recognize there's an SSD connected? Because the Windows repair thingy couldn't find the installation, and the BIOS shows no SSD surely I'd have problems reinstalling Windows?

Whats the model and firmware version of the SSD you are using?

Not sure what firmware, but I don't recall updating it since I installed the SSD, which was about 4/5months ago. Had no issues until now. And it's an OCZ Vertex II 60GB.

Ive had that in the past, it was the hard drive messing about for me. Remove all the hard drives and just put in the windows drive and it will stop doing it.

But I have everyhing I need on the HDD (apart from Wndows).

In the BIOS under Storage Configuration, SATA3_0 has : Not Detected. For some reason, the SSD isn't being recognized, and I'm not sure why. AHCI mode is on, so everything is in place for things to work, so I'm not sure why things arn't working properly here.

I jsut need to system to regcognize the SSD.

Hmm, thats strange then if it is not identifying it in the Bios, try plugging it in a different sata port and see if that works, if not then that does sound like either a faulty cable (happens more often that you think) or a bad SSD.

Okay, I tried a differen't SATA port, same thing. Tried a different cable, same thing. This is looking like a dead SSD isn't it?

and youve tried the other sata ports on the motherboarD??

Yup, tried the one the HDD was connected to (which recognizes the HDD, so I know it works), and still nothing.

I think an RMA is in order! Your HDDS are being read correct?

Yeah, plugged the HDD back into the SATA port I tired the SSD in, and the HDD was picked up right away.

So I've never done this with an SSD, I'm sure I'm out of warranty from the retailer on it, so how do I go about doing this?

Well first things first, when did you purchase it and what make is it?

I have the RMA form filled out now, thanks. Havn't submitted it yet, just looking for other possible fixes before doing so.

Is this not the same problem that other OCZ SSD owners have been experiencing?

Can it be fixed? Or is it an RMA deal?

Possibly, the reason that almost every time someone specs an OCZ SSD in their build, an experienced voice from these forums advises on a change, usually to Crucial or Intel.

Funny, it was here I was told by multiple people to purchase an OCZ Vertex II.

Oh i see you already told us what make it was. No OCZ are a good brand, they had problems with their earlier firmware but that has since been fixed and it was doing to do with the problem your having.

I've never updated the firmware on my SSD (had no idea I had to), so I could still be using older firmware. But if you think that wouldn't cause the issue I'm having, then I guess that doesn't matter so much.

Anyway, any other suggestions before submitting the RMA form?

The problem earlier firmware was having was in relation to ACHI, nothing to do with them not being read by the bios. Its a dead SSD so just send away and enjoy your new one : )

Oh well, here's to a week or so of waiting for a replacement!
