bootmgr missing, can't install vista

My mates Dell desktop died the other day, a few days after the warranty ran out. It was either a motherboard or graphics card failure. He decided that he wanted to build something decent.

He bought a new mobo and case, I gave him a good psu, graphics card and hd.

Problem is that when he tries to install vista on the freshly formated hd (formated it on my pc) first thing that happens is that a message comes up saying that bootmgr is missing. He has the bios setup so that the optical drive is the first boot.

Any ideas what is going on here?

Any help appreciated.

I think what you should have done is let vista format it on his pc. I had same problem, did exactly what you did. It was because i formatted it on my old pc.

put it back in another pc, delete any partitions then stick it in the new build. Or if you can do it in the new pcs bios do it there.

If the harddrive is formatted, vista should just install straight onto it. But technically when you formatted it on your pc it should be ready for your pc not his.

Best advice, if your making a new build there is no point in using a old HD. Get a new one for around £40

Sorry mate but IMO is the worse advise i have seen on her in long time, no offence intended. upgrading a hdd s one think but throwing at away just becuse its a new build is crazy

When I put the HD back in my pc; can I delete the partiton inside windows, or will I need to do it with my windows disk in and boot up from my optical drive to do it?
