BOOTMGR missing - XP laptop - no cd drive?

I followed a guide on the internet about preparing a bootable USB drive and then copied the OS over to it but still no luck.

I now get the message:
Remove disks or other media
Press any key to restart

Any ideas?

you can do startup repair from dos with win7 but no idea if you can on xp

hirens boot cd might help

Sounds like a bad installation on the USB drive.

Is the BIOS set to boot from the USB Drive first?

If the BIOS has the option, enable UEFI ? Worth a try..

Rufus should let you create the bootable USB stick directly from the .iso:

Brilliant, that got me to c:\ which is actually the USB stick.
Now to put XP on the USB and see if it works.

That didn't work, XP setup won't work from DOS.

I'm getting somewhere:
I ISO'd an XP installtion disk and then using Rufus I made a bootable ISO disk.
At the moment it is installing.
