Sometimes I feel a little bit behind the curve after recently discovering how fast a php framework can make coding compared to hardcoding.

Now i have been going through some lynda tutorials on HTML5 and wordpress theme making. I was comfortable altering themes but now i'm getting to the stage where I think i could transform html in to wordpress.

But again when i make html sites i do it from scratch with just a code editor.

I have seen bootstrap and boilerplate's mentioned.

Am I missing out on doing it all from scratch?

Yes and no. Yes, you are "missing out" on all the smaller details and potential learning of creating your own site. No, you are not missing out on the headaches, lengthy spells of finger work etc. that you get when creating your own.
