Hi Chaps,
Had my new rig as specc'ed and rec'd by Raikiri for 2 weeks or so now.
Was going well, performance was excellent. Booted up yesterday eve to be greeted by a Windows could not start error. The problem file was 'hal.dll' and i was informed it was either not present, or corrupt
Swung the XP Pro Disc into the drive, and composed a repair on my windows install on the C: Partition. While doing the regular Windows install that takes 39/40 minutes or so, a series of errors relating to .dll's came up, and all I could do was ok them. I would say there were around 8 but didn't note them down or the file they were referring to im afraid.
Once finished, did another restart, then received a blue screen of death
informing of the following :
Nothing's been added since the original setup. Haven't run anything malicious that i know of, and no new hardware's been added that could cause it to cry, again that I know of...
What's my next step?
Haven't tried chkdsk, I don't hold out much hope though.
I will try that and a repair again on the partition later when at home.
Anything else if those two fail? Really desperate as there's loads of newly added data I didn't backup that I really can't afford to loose

Format needs to be avoided at all costs in reality.
Thanks,
Pete.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:
check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
