Hi guys, I currently have a 3770k at 5GHz on a Z77 UD5. There is also 16GB RAM and some SSDs and normal 2TB drives for storage. GFX is a ATI 7970. All this is cooled in 2 custom loops, one on a 120.4 and another on a 120.3.

I changed cases early last year to a Corsair 900D and to a 1200w power supply, but the actual hardware wasn't changed an I think I'm due an upgrade as it's about 2 years old or more.

I do some gaming, but mainly run my 3x24" monitors for web design and basic messing about.

What's out there at the moment in terms on an upgrade? Are there some Intel chips coming out soon worth upgrading to with some nice DDR4 RAM?

Cheers

Do games/Windows actually use the 6 cores on these chips? Are they easy to overclock? And how old are these chips? Is there anything new on the way I should wait for?

Wait for Broadwell

Going to a 4790k won't see you much benefit, if any at all. 3770k to 4790k is pointless. Likewise with going to X99 right now. If so, I'd look at crossfiring that 7970 there if you have a suitable PSU (you have a 1200W PSU which I assume is good so this is an option), or perhaps upgrading that to a GTX 970 for a bit of a boost in games

Does the web design hammer your CPU?

Nah, not at all, but normally have quite a few programs open at once etc, and I'm impatient, so like things to happen immediately!!

How long away is Broadwell and what is it?!

Broadwell is the next line of CPUs/CPU after Haswell (the 4670k, 4690k, 4790k etc)

It's supposed to support DDR4? Either way, it's really not worth the jump from 3770k -> 4790k, especially clocked at the 5Ghz you have it at! :o

CPU won't help with that at all.
You could have a super fast PC running an old HDD and still be waiting 20 minutes for it to boot up. :p

Keep your 3770k at 5Ghz!!!!! and wait to see what performance Broadwell can deliver if you have a scratch that needs itching.

The only thing in your PC system worth upgrading is the video card as others have said! You'd be spending over £500-600 for literally a 20-30% jump in performance. You could wait for Broadwell but there's no news of Intel bringing out anything revolutionary with it so I'd expect that to be the usual 10-20% jump in performance beyond the current gen. Especially as Broadwell is just a die shrink of Haswell rather than a new architecture. If anything you'll probably want to hold off upgrading until Intel release their new 'Skylake' architecture towards the end of 2015 or start of 2016. That's the next time we're likely to get a noticeable jump in performance.

I'm assuming your 24" monitors are 1080p. Might be worth upgrading one or more of them to a 27" 1440p monitor or possibly replacing all with a 34" 21:9 monitor if appropriate.

I've had my same PC for 5 years and, other than replacing a faulty video card and adding more RAM (6GB > 18GB), only now am I starting to think about swapping the motherboard/CPU for something more up to date and faster!

Cheers guys, to be honest it's doing everything I want it to so I may just wait! I haven't tinkered since the case change so I have itchy fingers! Maybe I'll wait till the end of this year or the start of 2016 for them new Intel chips and be one of the guinea pigs to test them!
