Im in the unfortunate position of having a bit of cash that i can justify spending on an upgrade. I say unfortunate because for the last month i have been driving myself crazy trying to decide which way to go, or whether to bother at all.

Current rig is in my signature.

I had decided to go to the bay for a Q6600 @ £70 or even a £9550 at a reasonable price, but every item i go for either balloons in price or i get sniped at the last second.

I can justify spending maybe £300-400 now on mobo, processor, and ram, and maybe another £75 plus any change from the above in a month or two to beef up the gfx if needed (maybe a second 5770 to xfire)

I game at 1680 resolution on a 22" monitor.

my favourite games at the moment are X3 Terran conflict and call of pripyat - i have done a little bit of benching homework and am leaning towards something like:-

955 BE @ £115
890gx mobo @ 105 or so
plus some DDR3 (suggestions)

with a cheaper option being :

955 BE @ £115
Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3 MA770 (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard [GA-MA770T-UD3] @ £73
use existing 4gb ddr2 800 (will this nerf the performance?)

or even:

look harder for a q6*00

I dont think i will ever get enough posts to get in the members market, im just not that opinionated.

thanks for any advice given, sorry about the life story.

Can you hold on for a little while, ie early part of next year as both Intel & AMD are launching new range of cpu's.

amd are lunching new range of cpus too??
i thought it was just intels mainstream range that are coming out Q1 of 2011

Yes I could, i might have to exclude myself from every PC shop on the net though.

Im guessing if you had any more info on the release dates you would have shared it, but any idea whether we are talking Q1 or Q2?

why bother upgrading cpu and card for negligible performance difference?
what monitor you got? Is it a flat CRT running 200Hz or a 120Hz TFT? Neither? job done!
What hdd you got? Is it a 120GB Vertex SSD or one from the Intel house? Neither...? :p

I went from the same processor to a q9550 and saw massive performance gains. Thought about waiting for i7 originally, but needed the performance increase. Grab an i5 760 while its on offer.

And couple it with MB & Ram to keep within your budget;
