So erm yeah - cheap innuendos aside I have been asked to select somewhere to go out for a meal for my birthday and I'm having trouble choosing.

Non of the places we usually go to even remotely appeal anymore - Beefeater, Brewyers Fayre, Harvester and even smaller local places all seem to serve the same disappointing food and always seem to mess up the order somewhere during the course of the evening.

Anyone got any good ideas of where to go/look at for a decent meal that won't cost a small fortune?

(Ideally Dunfermline area if anyone has specific recommendations)

Trying to resist commenting on the thread title ;) Especially as the first place you mention as an example is Beefeater.

It sounds like you've been eating at pretty rubbish places to be honest. Why not have a search in the local area for something a bit out of the ordinary for you? Look out for some korean (or choose some random country you don't eat the food of very often) restaurants, check out a couple of online reviews and then head down. Be friendly to the staff and ask for recommendations. Smaller and less mainstream places will be more than happy to help you out once you're in there.

I don't know the area at all so I can't comment on anything more specific sorry.

Your location says St Andrews so this isn't far from you, but there is an awesome Tapas place in broughty ferry if that's your kind of thing.

I'm not surprised you are bored of identikit chain pubs.

Whilst you have to read some of the reviews which a pinch of salt, Trip Advisor can be useful for seeing what places are out there. There's 114 places list for Dunfermline, though that includes cafés etc.
