Borked 8800GT or drivers ?, please help :(

Basicly I just got an 8800GT, and asus one, and have got a few problems.

I installed the card did 3dmark06 etc all was fine...

Tryed a few games to test performance quickly went fine.
Then I got to tdu, and when i clicked on garage, the screen filled with pink-red trangles and the pc froze kinda, the music played on for a bit, then froze for 3 secs, then resumed, then froze, then resumed, then played on and I reset.
Tryed UT3 demo and same happened, purp triangles, music played on for a sec or 2 but froze after, then played on , then froze and didn't come back.
Tried it again, now without purp tirangles, it just froze, same thing with music.

Could the card be overheating?
Could the card be faulty?
Are the drivers acting up?

Card is not Oc-ed, barley installed drivers for it.
Oh and the driver cd says it can't find a suitable blabla to install drivers for, nvidia stock drivers work fine, the asus ones don't though .

Please help, I've spent all my money saved in *** past few months on this card.
Psu is fine 12 V line = 12.1 V during load, 12.2 V idle.

Winxp btw with newest whql drivers.
Runnin dual screens.

Just tryed Halo 2 in Vista, and it's even worse, I got a BSOD and even the bsod screen was artifacted, see this :

I assume this is a borked card ?
What do these types of artifacts mean and what is the bsod about ?
Pfffff just when I was happy to ave a new card all I get is problems .

Hmmm just been playing HL2 on it in vista for 15 misn without problems, what on earth is going on?

Can any1 shed light on all this PLEASE ?

EDIT , played thru a whole lvl in halflife 2 and no problems.

Are there any known problems with the 169.25_forceware_winvista_64bit_english_whql ?
And with the 169.21_forceware_winxp_32bit_english_whql ?

If a fresh reinstall doesnt sort it, then I'd say the card has some issues. My new GTS just slotted in, and worked fine with the latest drivers, as do most people's G92 cards by the sound of it.

I'd definetly go with some kinda problem with the card. BSOD's I'd have maybe been looking at drivers, but graphical corruption like that on a BSOD is more like a problem with the card itself. I'd be looking to RMA and providing the supplier with screenshots of the problems.

Just did a whole race in clin mcrae dirt demo, and watched the whole replay, and no problems, I just don't know now just an hour b4 I was sure the card is damaged but now after playing HL2 and CM: Dirt fine, I'm starting to think these drivers are just a piece of ******* crap.

Did a quick game in m2tw and the benchy in CoH, both stable', Gona try playing a proper long game now in CoH see what happens.

EDIT: Hmmm just did a 20 min CoH game and no problems at all.

Just tryed bioshock and same symptoms as ut3 had, but this time I decided to wait, and eventually a BSOD showed up, tbh I'm starting to think the drivers absolutely hate UT3 engined games.

First this happens: Music/background happyly plays on, and hdd light flashes once in awhile wich means widnows is still working, altho it doesnt respond to alttab etc. :

(zoom in especially on bottom and ull see the artifacts)

Then this bsod after half a min appears:

Any idea's, so far this has happened to:

ALL UT3 engined games
TDU ( but this is highly unstable, also used to crash sometimes on my old card @ start, and besides the copy is already damaged, not properly saving games and not starting races anymore)
Halo2

Stuff so far working fine:

Source engined games
Company of heroes
Colin mcrae dirt
3dm06
Vista aero

Any idea's?

Put your PCIe verson from 1.0a to 1.0 in your bios and see if thats any better, had a similar problem and it fixed it for me. Read that 1.0a conflicts with 8800GT 512mb G92s due to the bus interfering with the shader throughput, making stuff not come out right. Works in some games but not in others.

1.0 makes it work in all games :D

Use rivatuner to increase the fan speed, just bang it up to 100%, paly a game thats known to crash/freeze and see how you get on. I've seen a few ppl mention crashing/freezing here (me included with a bfg 8800gt) and increasing the fan speed can help. I personally think that the stock fan on these cards is not up to the job, especially the factory overclocked ones. Give that a go and see how you get on.:)

Tbh I'm starting to lean to a borked card again:

I've tried 100% fan speed, caused temps to stay below 55 C during gaming, but at the same time the games that worked b4 started crashing.

CoH has crashed.
CoD4 has crashed & froze pc ( but b4 my pc completly froze, i could manage to do ctrl alt del, and noticed a tab with ''directx error'' with the cod4 icon on it next to cod4.
Cod showed same artifacts as all games, red squares thrugh the whole screen.

Will try the pci-e 1.0 thing but I have little hope left tbh...
How long does an Asus RMA usually last?
Edit: Could not find a pci-e option, all I could find was an option to select the PEG link speed, I set it @ slow from normall. I've got pci-ex 1.1 btw not 1.0 or 1.0a.

Meh, and I've heard asus RMA's take ages.

I just wanted to have a nice card for the holidays and for the last 6 weeks of school b4 I have to start learning for my exams, but no, I won't be able to enjoy gaming till after exams, wich is 4 months grrrr. ( as asus RMA's seem to take 5-6 weeks).

Stupid nvidia & asus, curses for you for making faulty products.

Ahwell ill give it back after xmas, I bought it 2nd hand, but the guy still has warranty, he can go wait 6 weeks for RMA :p, I'll just return it to him for my 200€ ( I could rma it myself, I got the receipt and the retailer is just 15 kilometres away ( 10 Mi), but I can't be bothered waiting tbh, after xmas I'll give the guy a call saying I wana return his card, and I'll just buy another elsewhere, this time I guess I'll pick BFG or EVGA or whatever company does an RMA quickly.

Shame really, all looked well, got the card with all bits n bobs, 2 years warranty from retailer ( of wich just 1 months have passed) and 3 years from Asus.

I am using the 169.21 drivers and have had no issues thus far running any game in XP. Same goes for the 169.25 under Vista. Hope you get your new card sorted quickly :)

Okay put back my old card in as my gaming addiction started to protest, ahwell guess my 6800GS has a few days still left till retirement after all. Prolly going to play Civ4 all night ( yep the one more turn thing is really VERY addicting).

Gona wait till after xmas to give the 8800 back, tbh I don't care for xmas, but I don't think it's good to rush into an agreement during xmas days when people wana be left alone with family/friends.

Hmm just noticed ocuk has now quite acceptable prices (since they are in stock) actually for the 8800GT, the BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail espacially caught my eye.

Now my question is: How does OcUK handle RMA's, do they test the cards themselves or do they ( like pretty much all dutch shops do) send em on to the manufacturers immediatly for testing there ( wich results in RMA's taking ages at company's like asus, xfx, etc...).

And

What's BFG's RMA policy and quality, incase my card would break down, how fast would I be able to expect the card (or the replacement) to be sent back ?

I really want to have a fast replacement incase I get another borked one, usually I never assume stuff is broken, but tbh, this first breakdown of my most expensive pc part ever bought started a wory, I won't buy anything above 100€ anymore without being 100% sure it either alrdy works fine, or without being able to quickly and properly RMA it.
