Hello, I need help! I was running Vista and I tried to install XP in a seperate partition on my hard disk. It copied all the files across and then rebooted and got to this screen:

and it won't move off there whatever I do. :( if i press F2 or F11 it gives me this screen but nothing happens:

i've left it for half an hour, nada. the motherboard isn't beeping at me and as far as i can tell everything sounds like it's spinning okay. whatever have I done to it

P.S. motherboard is ASROCK P4VM800 if that helps at all.

Have you tried booting to the Vista DVD?... then running the Repair Console (or what ever its called in Vista!)

I think XP has FUBAR'd the Boot menu!... Vista uses a diferent type of Boot menu from XP iirc... and it needs re-building!. or summut like that!

As mentioned, get into Recovery Console, or whatever it's called.

In there type: FDISK/ MBR

Your MasterBoot Record should be back to how you want it.

Thanks for the quick responses guys, really grateful. Okay I tried restarting with the vista disk in but im still stuck at that screen, and it wont let me get to the 'Boot menu', it still says the menu has been selected and hangs there. So i cant get through to the recovery console at all. what to do... if nothing works, is there a way to physically format the hard drive so i can start again? with jumpers maybe?

P.S. I've been reading the stickies and it says to install older versions of windows first... guess I should have looked here before doing stupid things :o

i am assuming he means reset the cmos. you do this by moving a jumper across by one pin and then back again.

check out your mobo manual.

i dunno how this would fix your problem, but it might. i've fixed a few things by resetting the cmos.

but i would guess you have a boot loader problem, and you are right in thinking you installed them the wrong way round.

Whoa, exactly the same problem i'm having with my SATA DVD-RW drive.

One out of every three boots, it freezes there, and I have to take the DVD drive out (take the side of the case off and disconnect the drive's SATA cable) to get the stupid thing to boot.

I thought it was my PSU doing it. Although if others are having similar issues...

I suggest disconnecting all except the main HDD. See if it boots then.

i reckon you've got a usbkey plugged in

take it out and booting should continue :) (weird bug but i've seen it before)

Oops, I feel asleep! Dreamt of sata cables

digitalis: I salvaged this dvd drive from my old rig and probably forgot to change the jumpers. Whoops. So i took a breath and opened up the case and switched it over. It changed to master alright: but no difference, it still won't get past that screen. D'oh.

tute, are you dual booting i take it? otherwise our systems have nothing in common (yours is much better *jealous* :p ). So anyway I tried disconnecting everything but the HDD.. nothing. I suppose because the XP installation never got a chance to finish properly.

bledd., i actually did have a usb hard drive plugged in, i pulled it out but sadly it made no difference. good idea though.

anyone have any more ideas? im a bit flummoxed tbh. btw my HD is running on SATA and the dvd drive on IDE. If that helps

Nah, i'm just running Vista, however the bit in common is that mine freezes at exactly the same point, it's almost like it's looking for another HDD/DVD drive but can't find it.

Can you not even get past that screen with everything else disconnected?

What about with no drives at all connected? Does it even past POST and ask for a system disk?

If it doesn't then it sounds like a BIOS problem.

This almost certainly a hardware problem, not software (e.g. installing Windows).

Did your motherboard used to beep at you (should be a single short beep)?

If so, and thats not happening anymore, try unplugging everything that isnt necessary for a correct POST (CPU, RAM, GFX) and see if it beeps.

Try reseating CPU/RAM/GFX.

Reset the BIOS (check motherboard manual).

usb keyboard?keyboard set to be detected by os instead of bios?
edit:just saw you CAN get the screen to change so keyboard is working :o
