I've been to Langkawi and KL for the past 3 years and am thinking of venturing off to Borneo next year around April / May time.
Looking at a few hotels, i was thinking of staying at the Shangra La Rasa Ria which is 5 star and has a 64 acre Nature reserve as part of the hotel so sounds pretty heavenly to me :D

Any recommendations for this or any other hotels in Borneo ? What else is there "unmissable" to do while i'm over there ?

I lived there briefly when I was about 3, so I don't remember much of it.. other than the fact that I tried to eat a cockroach and there were scorpions in the woodpile!

I stayed at the Sutera Harbour resort bout 4 years ago. Site here It's in Kota Kinabalu. I can't comment on other hotels in the area but I really liked the place, my friend had treated me to an executive suite though :D
I'd say the shangri la seems like a better choice simply because of the nature reserve. Sutera is in the town but borneo is all about jungle, nature etc.
I've heard about a famous orang utang reserve somewhere in borneo but not sure if that's for the pubilc though.

As far as activities I did a canopy walk 150ft up in the trees and a day of white water rafting, involving getting a local train which takes you into the jungle only a little bit faster than you could jog :p Rafting was loads of fun though

Cheers mate, i think the sanctury is called (or in) Sepilok which is quite close to the Rasa Ria. Yup, i'm definately not too fussy for town life, i can get that at home !! It's the jungles and wilderness for me this trip :)

My Dad fought in the all but forgotton War out there in the Sixties but always maintained it was one of the most beautiful places he had ever been and always wanted to go back on holiday :(

I Stayed there too! and they upgraded us to a suite because the hotel was empty due to SARS!

The bathroom was soo cool, if you opened the blinds by the bath you could see people playing golf!

I lived in Brunei years ago. Used to stay at the Tanjung Aru when we were visiting KK, used to be nice, no idea what it is like now. Sepilok was worth a trip as was Sandakan.

Mulu caves in Sarawak were impressive.

Heh, I have a pile of photo's next to me from my time there years ago. The mulu caves were fantastic. The walk into the jungle is good fun. Brunei has the Empire hotel 6 stars  and Jerudong Park A visit to one of the longhouses is recommened in Sarawak. As are the markets in Miri.

I guess depends which part of borneo you going to and how long you staying. I think some unmissable things would be to climb Mt Kinabalu, visit sepilok orangutang reserve, do a river trip up the kinabitangang (sp?) and if you dive then you just have to go to Sipidan, although I hear you can't actually stay on sipidan island anymore. but thats based on going to sabah, I'm not sure if you go sarawak whats unmissable

I was there about april time last year. One of my highlights was staying out at Uncle Tan's (http://www.uncletan.com/) for a few nights. As the site says - it's definitely not the Hilton, but you'll be hard pressed to get closer to nature.

Wakeboarding is pretty cheap out of KK if that sort of thing appeals.

If you're up for a bit of challenge take a hike up Mt Kinabalu as well - I ended up walking like John Wayne for two days after but was worth it.

There's a blog on there too if you get really bored.

edit: I found Brunei to be rubbish, stay there as little time as possible.
