Behind you... Naked!
I have just bought a set of these.

I kind of like the sound on these, they are slightly better than the other ones I bought last year, that are now on my TV and doing a sterling job for the family, but they are still way too poor to replace my main PC Speakers ( Altec Lansing ) however, they are still a nice sound that I do like... a lot.

The thing is, that the BASS and the TREBLE are simply too far apart.

The sattelite speakers are supposed to be all rounders and they dotry to provide a mis range sound, but they simply fail to do that.
The BASS unit is just far too deep as well... its a smooth sound and not one bit harsh, but again, this is forcing a gap between itself and the sattelites, that no amount of EQ is able to fill in without ruining the sound.

So, I am thinking that the best solution, is simply to use another pair of speakers.

Here I am going to be presented with more problems I know, but to start with, I first need to know what are the best speakers to use?

What would be the best in terms of Watts and Ohms?
Are there any speakers already out there that I can just buy and add to the setup so I dont have to build my own?

Anyone able to offer any options / advise / soluitions?

That would be so good.

Thank you.

Out of curiosity, how come you didn't go for the Companion 50s?

I am in a similar position and looking to get something smaller but still punchy.

How come?

Bose are a wierd company, their kit is very nice, and very nice indeed.

However, and this is a huge however, the prices they ask, is simply disgusting, and for the price you pay, their kit is simply not good enough.

So, I bought these second hand.

Second hand with Bose, I pay a price that I am happy with... I get a great setup for the price I paid.

I have only bought one setup from Bose and that indeed was the Companion 5. Not the 50 as you have mentioned, but the 5, whci has a USB sound device built in and works via USB, ( but it also has the AUX-in and I found that a brilliant way to test the difference and whether I prefer the Bose USB or the SoundCard's Audio and I have to say that I do like the Quality of the Bose USB, plus it worked straigh off the bat with both Apple and Linux ).

No, it was simply that this came along and I saw it, didnt need it, but thought bugger it, I will have it anyway, cos I do need a new Audio solution for my Atari Music setup anyway, and so I will have a play before it goes onto the Atari and it was there and so I placed a bid, the max I was willing to cough up and I got it. I would NEVER again paytheir asking for their kit new. They are simply not good enough, but as I said, they are still incredibly good.

I guess the whole reason of why I am looking for a mid-range solution is a prime example of why they are not good enough...
The treble is incredibly crisp and crystal clear!
The Bass is deep and low and yet smooth and clear without any distortiion,
The midrange however... is simply awol!
It requires too much EQ to try bringing the sound together and this is then ruining the Audio entirely.

Like I said... not good enough!

As a side-note to the last post, I have a number of PC setups, each with various Audio solutions of whatever level.

My first splash out on a half decent setup, I bought a KTS 440, which I got for a tenner at some radio show in Llandudno some 300 years ago. I remember this setup because I still have it. It is incredible... Has a thump that is out of this world, and the speakers have been replaced now, but the cabinets are still the ones I had with it. I since bought some tweeters and fit them to the top of it and the mid range ones were raplced for all rounders and they are only 3" speakers but I used SONY ones, and it still sounds great.

my first ever 5.1 setup was by Altec Lansing, and these are the 251 model. Again, I still have these, and I bought these from this very OCUK peeps way back whenever, and they cost me I think £50 give or take and again, they rocked the world for me, and again I still have and use them on another setup. They still kick great and have a nice sound.

My main PC is using Altec Lansing 955 5.1 speakers that I have simply not been able to better as of yet, not for a price that I am happy to pay anyway.
I bought the Logiteck 5500 a few years back and this is amazing, but alas it falls short when comparing it to the Altec Lansing and so thats gone to one of my other PCs too!
The most sickening thing about this, is that the Altec Lansing speakers I got given to me off my mate, purely because there is no controls with them, and you need to use the Keyboard to adjus the Volume, and there is no headphone socket either... I use Creative cards with the Live-drives and so thats not an issue for me, and I was given these. I have spent hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of pounds over the years on various setups, and I have found that nothing even comes close to replacing the Altec, and so unless I cough up big time, I will simply be wasting money.

My sound Card connected to those right now is the Recon3D. Again I could do better, and I am at that moment where I am considering swapping it for one of the Asus cards, but Im stuck in my wheelchair right now, so its not going to be easy given that the case is a mahoosive heavy bugger.

now, as for some of the smaller setups I have seen, then there is now doubt that there is some serious pap out there... These cheap 2.1 setups are a complete load of garbage, and often are simply not even worth being doorstops. You have to cough up some cash to get something even half decent, but also dont think that a name will mean that its good either. As much as I love Altec, I have a very old setup that came with an old Trust PC many years ago, and this is a 2.1 setup that kicks a lovely hald decent and useable sound, and when looking closely at them, they are indeed built by altec lansing, and so I bought myself a set of 2.1 speakers not that long ago and they were so poor that I was disgusted that I bought them. In a similar fashion, I bought some Altec Headphones that cost me just over a ton, and again, I was disgusted by them... So much so, that I actually email them to tell them what I thought of them, and all they said was that they know they are poor andwere soon to be replacing them with another model, so I sould buy those instead, but nothing about getting my money back for these junk... wow! - I have since thrown them in the bin they are that poor.

Similarly I have had a set of corsairs that were a lot better than I expected them to be, and the same with creative speakers, although with creative, I would hope that they would be good because their entire line is relying on the fact that they need them to be good. They are 2.0 and have a nice all round sound.

Ah Im waffling now.
