Bose Wave Music System?

Yes you may be paying for the name but isnt that the same with a lot of things? (Apple for example?) my grandparents have never had any issues and are very pleased with the products.

Paying for the name usually equates to paying for quality. The reason a hell of a lot of companies have copied (or at least tried to copy) the Apple design.

My grandparents also own a Bose Acoustimas 5.1 system which sounds very good for its size

Saw a review for one of their acoustimass systems a while back and it got absolutely torn apart.

Low grade materials, non existent bracing and very cheap drivers led to massively compromised sound. The initial impressions were that it sounded powerful and room filling but after actual frequency analysis they discovered there was an entire frequency range in the middle of the sound field that was completely missed out. The little cubes covered the upper range and the sub covered the very bottom but there was nothing of any substance in the middle.

The concerning thing from reading some reviews in the past is that they seemed to sell on scientifically designed features (waveguide and reflecting design) that either didn't actually originate from them or have no actual beneficial effect.

A decent quality seperates

I'd suggest a Marantz CR603 this is a better option, plus speakers of your choice and budget.
More functions and flexibility and reported good sound, chap a work bought one and is very pleased with it.
Personally wouldn't touch a BOSE system.... due to low quality badge engineering and marketing BS.

Too many people nowadays have no ear for good sound quality. Now what the majority of people want, is what's easiest and what looks good. The average Joe consumer is not savvy enough when it comes to audio gear and buys into the marketing BS from salesmen and companies like Bose. It's got to the point now where the vast majority are likely to consider that Bose products offer great sound quality. It's not that Bose products offer great sound quality, it's just that most people have lost the ability to distinguish between decent sound quality, and something that is average.

It's a shame really. Another sign of the cheap plastic disposable world we now live in.

I can't vouch for their acoustimass systems as I have never heard them but I am left wondering whether anybody else has made anything comparable or better due to the size limitations of these systems simply because I do not know?

However, they do excell in computer speakers, particularly the Bose companion 2 and 5 range which are incredible. I have the 5 series and it is in some ways better than my Pioneer amp and Boston soundware setup. I also had the Aego's but the Bose Companion 5's thrashed them as well. I do however think that if somebody likes the sound from them then their best bet/challenge would be to go out and find a comparable system for cheaper. This would apply to any system regardless of brand name or manufacturer (though).

Exactly, couldn't agree more.

It really annoys me and people using my £130 soundcard, £260 amp and ~£300 speakers to play low quality youtube music at high volumes

A couple of years back some scrotum broke on of the midrange cones which cost me £60 to replace from B&W

That's another story. Lack of respect for other people's property. Lack of respect in general. Best not go down that road though, as the thread will go completely off the rails. :o
