A bit slow, but just noticed my Moto G has two apps as above, which are broadly similar. Was one supposed to supersede the other ?

Just checked and my 2nd Gen Moto G does as well.

The photos one appears to be the google one and integrates with google+ etc.

The Gallery one I think is a Motorola specific one

Essentially Photos is Google's Photos app and is what is included with the Google Play apps that manufacturers have to put on phones when they ship the Google Play Store.

Motorola include their own Gallery app (which in my opinion is worse than Google Photos) too. I suppose the reason is because it allows them to built it with their camera app and so the two interact better. Google Photos presumably doesn't work as well with Motorola's camera app as their own one does.

OP didn't say "Motorola Gallery". My mums Moto G doesn't have that one preinstalled, just the stock Gallery.

Motorola gallery is the stock gallery app - its not called Motorola gallery anywhere other than the play store (apps list it shows as gallery), but the icon is the same and I bet if you open the above link in play store on your phone, it will show as installed.

It doesn't. It says its incompatible. The icon and screenshots are completely different to the Gallery app.

Obviously depends on which Model, release channel (e.g. Carrier vs Motorola Retail vs Google Play Edition), and which version of the OS you are on.

On a Retail Moto G 4G (2nd Gen) running 5.0.2, then the stock gallery app is the Motorola one - others like yours are clearly different.
