Hi guys,

Just finished putting my new build together and after a few teething problems successfully booted :D My question now is, why in god's name are both my new F3 1GB drives clunking like hell and refusing to be recognised?? There is no noise if I only power them up but the problem comes when I connect the SATA cables.

Can they both be kaput? Anyone had any experience with anything like this?

System:
Phenom II X2 555
M4A89GTD Pro
4GB G.SKill Ripjaw 1600
Asus ATI 5770

Thanks in advance!

Clunking noise? are you sure you're plugging them in correctly? ;)

Are those two drives additional drives? if so I take it they're not recognised in Windows?

Hey Locke,

Can't see that there is anyway not to plug them in correctly is there?!

- board to drives (SATA ports 1 and 2)
- plug in power......

They are the only two drives so no Windows on there at all at the moment.

Just can't believe both drives are dead but can't see what could cause such a ruckus in there. CLUNK.......CLUNK......CLUNK! The sounds is beginning to annoy me.....!

Bizarre!

You can't get the connectors upside down/wrong way aroundl

They must have both received an impact during delivery/transport.

Anyone think it may be a power issue? My PSU is is only 450W, I probably should have opted for a 550W but was advised by a few wise heads that 450W should be fine for my needs. If I was struggling for a bit of power could this affect the HDD's?

Hey Stulid - yeh, I originally installed in SATA 5 and 6 as got a little confused with the line up; changed to 1 and 2 as thought this may have been the cause of the clunking.

ESAT - the sound is exactly like you'd expect off a failing drive, it's just that they are brand new and both arrived in impressive safety packaging. It doesn't rule out failure obviously but if it is, jeez, talk about bad luck!

As for the power, it was something I was wondering about. I had some trouble when I first powered up with the fans not spinning (resolved when I messed about with CPU ATX and RAM connections) and there is a noticeable audible drop in the PSU fan when everything is connected. I presume this is standard?

Do you know if they disks spin up even if the SATA cable is not connected?

If it is a PSU problem you need to connect minimal hardware and see if the problem goes away.
Try only one drive and connect up only the bare minimum stuff lilke motherboard/gfx card.

Also are the sata cables new? I have had a similar problem with some cheap make cables that caused random freezes, etc.

Yeh, I figured as much but desperate times...........

The initial spin up seems fine, it's as soon as the boot starts trying to detect the disks that the problem seems to occur. Should be able to rig them in to my old PC in the next hour or so, I'll let you know if there's any luck there. Frustration, frustration.

Well I can't get my breath........both drives appear to be dead. Put them one at a time into my old build and they both hung on the post screen; model detected but volume wouldn't post. Put my old SATA drive into new machine et voila showing in BIOS!

Can't believe my luck on this one, what are the chances of two dead drives?! I know I haven't mishandled them in any way and they were delivered in bubble wrap that was about a foot thick!

.......maybe I shouldn't have goosed that nun last week
