Bottleneck worries

Hey everyone,

Im thinking about upgrading my cpu from a Athlon 64 3000+ stock to a X2 3800+. However, ill probably upgrade my 6600GT to one of the new 8600GT (or whatever they will be called).

Im just wondering if there will be a bottleneck on anything because i only have a 15" monitor atm on that setup with a max res of 1024x768 (i have 17" monitors on my other pc's but they are occupied).

Thanks for any advice. :)

EDIT: Or would the Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego be better? I've checked benchmarks and the 4000+ is obviously better in single threaded games cause of the higher clock, but dual core is starting to become more apparent in new games.

Welcome to the forums. :)

Any 8800 card is serious overkill for a screen of that size. I'd personally look at a 19 inch ASUS monitor and something akin to the 1950PRO. The difference you will see by this upgrade will still be amazing, especially with the new CPU also.

Response to your edit: Dual core all the way.

Thanks for the quick reply. I had always thought that a high-end graphics card would be overkill for the monitor which is why i got the 6600GT last year. The OcUK Value Hanns-G HW191D is looking pretty tempting at the minute. Would widescreen be more benifical than a standard monitor since the resolution wouldn't go as high?

Looks pretty good. May just upgrade the cpu first and wait until the 8600's come out and see how they perform.

I was actually thinking today, would it be more worth while buying one of the bundles of OCuk such as http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-036-OK&groupid=701&catid=339&subcat= instead of upgrading the processor and graphics card? Ill list my current system and see what you think:

Athlon 64 3000+ Venice @ stock
1GB ram PC3200 (value brand)
Gigabyte 6600GT 128mb PCI-E
Maxtor 80GB HDD
FSP Bluestorm 500w psu
HP 15" monitor
Dual boot Windows XP/Vista x86

EDIT: Also im not fussed on SLi or anything.

Would a 17" monitor be ok? Because the native resolutions of a 17" and 19" are both 1280x1024. Also just on a side note. Does anyone know the shipping costs to Northern Ireland? Thanks

I would really love to, but im on a tight enough budget as it is unfortunately. Will the price of the bundle i linked a few posts back go down since the price cuts of the C2D are coming out next month?

Seen this motherboard which i think would suit me pretty well cause i could use my 1GB of DDR400 ram until i get some DDR2: Abit IP-95

And this processor: C2D E6300

Just one thing, can the DDR400 slots on the motherboard hold DDR2 ram?

I did listen to what you said, but the 1950pro is old tech and is basically useless for DX10, so i would prefer not to upgrade to that card if anything. And thats what you would personally choose. I wouldn't imo.

Im not talking about monitors here. The processor and motherboard wont warrant a new monitor, only the graphics card will.

nope, using a 15" monitor warrants a new monitor.
:)

from that link, the abit is ddr2, you have ddr1. wont work. if you want to reuse your ddr, look for asrock mobos.
