Bottleneck

This is the network topology. Excuse the naff pics the software advertised it was able to create network topologies but failed to have one switch or router :confused:



Everything is being bottlenecked by the 10/100 router, if I was to drop in a gig switch in between the router and the powerline adapter would it bring the network speeds up to 200mb where 1gb nics are available ?

No. The 200Mb advertised on the powerline things is misleading, best case is they will run in 100Mb in both directions i.e. the same as 100Mb Ethernet. They depend on the quality of your electrics also.
 
whats the speed between the shuttles and the nas?

(nothing goes via the router on your network for point to point. I had a similar problem, which was caused by the switch on my netgear throttling internal traffic)
 
I haven't tried transfering anything from the 100mb shuttle so I don't know but i'll give it ago later.

The 4 port powerline adapters don't mention hub/switch on them so I thought they literally just created a connection through the electrics to the router.

The powerline adapters are the bottleneck here. They act on a hub basis - 'up to' 200mbit can be talking at once.

If you took those out, dropped a gig switch in and ran wires to all the units, then you would get much higher throughput between machines. If it's a proper NAS unit you could saturate gigabit no problem (~120MB/s).

I would love to do that but there'd be cables every where, I already installed the powerline adapters as the wireless I had previously was slow and unreliable :(
