Bottleneck?

My old Q6600 overclocked to 3.60GHz was bottlenecking my single 5850, particularly in games that use less than 4 cores.

Definately wouldn't recommend going CF5850 on a stock Q6600.

What type of games does he play.

Games like mmo's (wow and the like) and big multi Ayer games like cod are very CPU bound so if you don't over lock it you will see little to no performance increase.

My old q6600 @3.4ghz considerably bottlenecked my 5850 crossfire set up in cpu intensive games. I noticed it most in BF3 where it was usually better to turn crossfire off.
It usually takes a bit more cpu power to feed two or more graphics cards and as the game already occupied 99-100% of the cpu cycles trying to run with 2 cards yielded significant fps dips.

To give you a more objective view here are my benchmark results in 3dmark 11 pre and post upgrade to a 3570k, both are using 5850's:
q6600 @ 3.4ghz p5649
3570k @ 4.5ghz p7756
