That old chestnut.

I have been seeing in a few games in certain maps with my new GTX 1080 (Doom, Tomb Raider) with the refresh rate at 120Hz and the GPU = 70% and power drawer = 80% and FPS = 85, moving the view to something less complex and the frames go up to 120 (obviously GPU and Power drawer arnt maxed either at this point as the scene is not complex anymore, unless I turn vsync off)

Now I have a pretty powerful pc (see sig) and the last bottleneck I has was when I had a 780Ti running 1600MHz memory, moving over to 2400MHz helped that time definitly.

Who here could guess where the bottleneck is. I.E CPU or memory, the reason I ask is if i need to maybe move over to a X99 platform???

My PCI-Ex is definitly running X16 mode too.

Moving to X99 won't give you any performance boost in those games unless you are limited by your ram which I doubt.
Is your CPU overclocked.? If yes than by how much.?

I have tried at 4.5 and it yielded a few more frames 5 - 10 but still not convinced its all CPU.

There must be a bottleneck if the GPU cannot run at max all the time in certain scenes.

I very much doubt it's the CPU to be honest. A 4790k is still more than capable of running with a 1080.

Might be because of the new cards and some games not fully optimised in drivers yet. I'll try on my system shortly.

I found it was in that open scene in doom where you have to jump across that huge bridge where you find the double jump boots. Right where you first start that level.

I just ran the rise of the tomb raider benchmark at 1080p DX11, FXAA, fullscreen and max settings apart from AO set to HBAO+. I used the OSD from afterburner to monitor GPU usage while the bench ran through the 3 scenes and usage was between 95-100% through the whole run with my overclocked 1080 founders. I used a i7 6700k @4.6ghz and DDR4 ram @3200mhz.
Only by dropping to 720p could i bottleneck the gpu, usage anywhere from 71-97% during the bench.
Try 1080p and above settings on the bench and see what usage you see.

If you have TW3 that will tell you. That's been recently patched on latest drivers and runs 99% with a single 1080 at all times in my rig.

So does that mean TW3 never used to max out on your pc until the patch? i.e it is down to driver optimizations?

It was about 60% on each GPU in SLI until I updated the drivers, which updated TW3 profile. Now they are pretty much maxed out all the time with v-sync off.

Majority of other games sit at 80% due to drivers not been updated yet.

I didn't test a single GPU before and after though so couldn't say.

I still use 1600mhz memory and its fine to me. Maybe I am missing out on some performance but I haven't noticed. This motherboard won't oc the memory at all.

So I did some TR tests and there is no bottlenecking at 1440p

I found another scene in DOOM where there is apparent bottlenecking - it always seems to be scences where there is partical physics (level where you get the double jump boots - hats off to the delelopers to the most beautiful cable sparking particals I have evers seen and the level where you enter Hell and the lava glowing particles).

I was getting about GPUPOWER 80% GPULOAD 78% CPULOAD 50% @ 76 FPS

I then oc'd to 4.5GHz and 78 FPS
I then oc'd OFF and RAM at 1600! and 75 FPS

So I can definitly say it is not CPU or RAM bound but rather code especially around partical physics, ill play with some game settings today and toggle certain game candys off to zero in on the culprit.

On a side note, i cannot say how classic DOOM feels, love the game, it takes me back to the 90's they way they have made the maps, game rollout and weapons, it is good old classic DOOM on steriods, love the weapon mods.
