Installed it and just after it installed it tried to run the EA registration but it threw up a Windows Error (dont send, send. one) and then when i first ran BF2142 it crashed my PC, took me about 30 mins to get XP to boot back into the system. No idea whats going on. Trying to download the latest nvidia drivers from site and thats being ridiculously slow :(

now the kids might have all gone to bed, lets try and help you;-

have you changed any drivers of late ?
any new hardware installed ?
did you install the bf2142 patches ?
whats your setup , gfx, proc?
give us more details and what the actual error states/says

Make sure you delete the 'Battlefield 2142' folder from My Documents then do a fresh install. I had the same problem and it was down to my previous install of it. (- I must have customized the resolution of something  )

That folder contains most of the options for the game.

Yep i second that, do a fresh install, and make sure all your drivers are up to date and stable, i think you have more of a hardware problem than bf2142

tried running any other games?

HL2 runs fine with my MSI 7900GTO 512mb card (with latest drivers) running an athlon 64 3700+ with 2gb Geil Value Ram and an M-Audio firewire audiophile sound card (have followed EA website directions for changing sound acceleration stuff too)

I have patched it and run it using a no cd from somewhere and using the original disc. it shows the initial BF2142 small splash screen, then the screen goes dark (but not off) and then flashes once more to dark (but not off) then the PC just reboots itself then says it's recovered from a serious problem.

sounds like a hardware problem, altho maybe your forcing a refresh rate thats conflicting and shutting the monitor/PC down?

1280 x 1024 @ 75hz is perfectly normal as far as HL2 is concerned so why not a newer game.

Resolution conflict crash. Used to get loads of people with this problem back in the early days of BF2.
Start the game in its default Res.
Also that no cd business bothers me. Instal the game and use the CD for starters, sort the res and Then do what you like.

I would like to try this but how do you get it to load up in its native resolution, it doesnt give me any option to :(
