Bought my first digital slr today Canon 400d. I had been looking at one for ages and reading up on things.

I decided to go for this one as it seemed preety easy to use and after all its my first one and i didnt want anything to complicated. So far i must say i am very impressed at how easy it is to use i was expecting something really complicated and have a lot of reading up to do before i even turned it on. But this wasnt the case.

Im heading to florida in 6 weeks and i might get the chance to see a shuttle launch so wanted to cath it with a good camera.

Any advice or anything guys, i know im going to need some extra lenses and stuff but i wont be doing any proffessional stuff just the odd picture at family gatherings and holidays etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Get a nice case to protect it, a tripod if your taking pictures of people, would be helpful.

Lens wise perhaps a 55-200mm or something similar would be adequate for you, as well as the kit lens. Would cover most things for you.

sounds good i already have a tripod for my video camera so it should work fine.

What about secind hand lenses?

Fair enough.

Second hand lenses are fine as long as they are in decent condition.

Edit: sent you an email.

Make sure the cameras pointing the right direction, twice I've seen a launch and both times the camera was pointing at the wrong building. I was wondering why it looked like daylight but couldn't see anything in the viewfinder :o

I know it sounds stupid but you're miles away and there are a couple of buildings which "could" be the launch points. Both times I've got it wrong :o

I bought a Canon EOS 400d last week and as a first time SLR user I would also appreciate any tips / advice :)

My main tip would be read up on camera techniques so you understand the how you can use shutter speed and aperture not just to get the correct exposure (your camera will do that for you) but to create different effects in your photos. There are lots of websites which give you information but i find books easier to read and would recommend

Understanding Digital Photography: Techniques For Getting Great Pictures by Bryan Peterson

There is also an online training course in one of the stickys in the photography forum which is quite good.

Other than that be careful you don't get L Glass fever as photography is expensive enough without you catching that.

i think i am going to get a book and do some searches online because this camera is great and i have no idea how to use half the features it has.

Try looking here. This guy gets some fantastc shuttle pics, though I beleive he's a NASA employee so gets about twice as close as Joe Public. However, the EXIF data should give you some useful pointers.

Do you have a decent telephoto lens? IIRC, the closest the public can get to the pad on launch day is 6 miles.....
