Hi all

I bought a brand new laptop today and inside the box is a leaflet explaining that the laptop i have bought is vista capable, and also that pc's purchased between a certain time are eligable for windows vista upgrade, the laptop is a acer 3053wxci with windows xp on. There is not voucher as such, just a leaflet inside the box. it says all i have have to do is state the model of laptop, os, proof and date of purchase and I should get a vista upgrade.

But im not understanding all this correctly, has anyone else come across this leaflet and could maybe help me understand what im eligable for ?

acer
Edit: I found this website on the acer website, I tihnk its what I need to do, http://upgradeweb.moduslink.com/vista/

I dont know what is the Serialized Upgrade
Redemption Number is, does someone here no ?

Much appreciated

What you are eligable for depends on what version of XP you already have...

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition -> Windows Vista Home Basic Edition £29
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition -> Windows Vista Home Premium Edition £45
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 -> Windows Vista Home Premium Edition FREE
Microsoft Windows XP Professional -> Windows Vista Business Edition FREE
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Tablet PC Edition -> Windows Vista Business Edition FREE
Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition -> Windows Vista Business x64 Edition FREE

I'm not sure if these upgrade paths are inclusive, I have tried to find out but not had any luck.

so how does this work? Do you automatically get an upgrade to Vista when its released and windows update downloads it?

I just bought a new PC from a certain shop and that had a label on it saying about the Vista thing too but coudlnt find anything in the box. Theyre shut now otherwise id give them a ring, but ive only just thougt about it.

With the voucher, you'll be required to claim the licence from the OEM who will send you media in the post.

Also its worth going for the Home Premium package as the Home Basic is crippled and has no more functionality than XP Home. Premium gives you media center stuff and all the new shiny graphics, basic doesn't.
