Hey,

I've just filled in my accomodation form and put down for purbeck, can anyone give me some details on when you pay rent, tips, shops/gym/ cheap pubs near there?

TIA!

Where about in Purbeck?
It is a big area, including Swanage & Wareham.

Let me know specifically what area you are interested in and I will do my best.

BTW, Purbeck is a nice area to live in, I was brought up in Purbeck, born in Swanage and raised in Wareham.

Bit of a treck to Uni from Wareham, around 20 miles 'ish.

I didn't actually live in Purbeck, but basically it's right in the middle of Bournemouth town so has everything you need around it. You pay the rent once a term a couple of days after your loan comes through (so 3 payments). Bus to uni from purbeck is 40p a journey when you buy a £4 card, so works out as roughly £4 a week if you go in every day!

Cheapest pub near Purbeck is probabaly one called "The Inferno" does pound pints on certain nights and other than that you get a yellow card which makes the drinks nice and cheap.

As far as shops .. there is all your usual clothes shops in town, purbeck is right next to a huge asda which has a gym as well (not been there, but been told it's ok)

I use the University Gym and its only £80 for the whole years membership and has 2 power racks, smith machine, 1 bench press, 2 other benchs, loads of free weights, loads of different resistance machines and some other cardio machines.

If there's anything else you need then just ask, sorry this isn't worded very well, it's still early!

Edit: Also if your quite a social person then Purbeck is the best place for it, seems to be a good laugh! What course you studying?

Purbeck was great. :D

You pay in three lump sums, one for each term, a few weeks after you get your loan...can't fully remember, it was last year. :)

On topic of Gyms, there is the uni one, and there is one underneath Asda, by the train station.

Uni gym sounds perfect especially at £80! Is it the one above the climbing wall? On the tour we didn't go up there :( Sounds like a good place to live (purbeck, not the gym).

I'm studying television production :)

Yea it's above the climbing wall. It's not the most amazing gym for the cardio side of things but is very adequate for weight lifting and i think i've read some of your posts in SA and thats what your probabaly looking for? I do most of my cardio by going on bike rides / runs along the beach! Much more interesting lol

Yeah, the gym is above the climbing wall...not actually been in there though...too lazy. :D

For full membership for a year it's something like £130, for basic it's £80...I think, can't fully remember the pricing.

Purbeck is good for sociable and for not so sociable people due to the fact you are in a flat of 5 (some are 6) people, so you socialise with them, but you have 4 flats per floor, and there are often large groups of people that go out together, especially at the start of term.

You get things like pub crawls etc. organised by the staff at Purbeck to help you socialise. I certainly had great fun there, I'm not one to be clubbing every night and neither were my flatmates, which was good, if I'd ended up with people that always went clubbing I'd have gotten annoyed.

Inferno is the local SU owned pub in Bournemouth, due to the two campuses there is Inferno on Lansdown and Dylans on Talbot. The Firestation is also SU owned and so runs loads of SU organised events, which is good.
All of the local pubs and clubs are good (that I've been to anyway), but avoid FYEO, and go to Wiggle at least once. :D
For prices of drinks etc. just don't go out on Fri/Sat nights to the main bars and clubs in town as it's non student nights so they charge silly amounts for everything. Mon-Thurs nights are all student nights so there are loads of places that have offers on drinks and things so you can get merry and have fun.

Do they still have Cranborne House down at Bournemouth Uni? I stayed there in my first year (about 8 years ago now) - had a great year.

(Sorry for intruding on thread!)

It's right next to purbeck, basically the second best halls!

I think he meant Glenfern, which was basically a multi story car park, with two floors of rooms stuck on the top. Very dank, dingy and horrible...couple of my mates lived there last year, but this year it was stopped being used as halls due to the Uni getting a building in Poole.

Cranborne is just across the road from Purbeck. In New-terms, It's newplace > Purbeck > Cranborne now. All good halls nowadays. :)
