Boxee Box by D-Link

bit pricy, could just build an old 775 mini pc for the same cost with much better specs...and then stick xbmc on it.

i like that remote though, is that MCE compat? wonder if they will sell that seperately.

I personally wouldn't spend that much.

Yes it is overpriced in the UK (its $199 in the US). But it seems we always get shafted on price.

It it does exactly as I hope it does ill be happy to pay the price. Im sick and tired of faffing around with full on media PCs, software DNLA servers, using Blu Ray player or Xbox to stream etc. All I ever wanted was something that is a simple to use and nice on the eye as my AppleTV is but will play everything I though at it in 1080p. Not that much to ask surely???

i tried boxee this week. If i was to setup a HTPC i would setup a linux box and then have boxee for web applications and such and use xbmc to play my own content.

Boxee works well for web apps but i do not like the idea that i have to log in to use it, which makes me paranoid. But xbmc works so well and i like that you can change the skins.

apparently myth tv is the best for PVR also ;)

I would just setup a mini ITX box and use that as a HTPC.

confused, Mine still says 14th - 15th November, but others are getting later dates. I did pre order 18th September. So hopefully Im near the top of the list :)

I've been quite interested in getting one of these for a while but I don't particularly like the Boxee software, if someone can get it running XBMC (which I can't imagine would be too hard to do) then I will most likely get one of these for living room :)

Aren't these and the google tv products all having a really tough time with the content providers not allowing them access until they pay licensing fees to them. In the states they are now next to useless until it's resolved :( kinda sucks since you can just open a browser on a pc and get the content anyway.

Got fed up of the date slipping from the poeple I ordered it from so ive cancelled the order and ordered from someone that has them in stock.

Should be here tomorrow :)

The remote looks interesting.
I've always liked the idea of a remote with a slide or foldopen qwerty keyboard and touch pad for tinkering with XBMC settings for me but a far simpler directional buttons, play, pause etc for the wife to use just for finding and playing files on the front.

This looks like a step in that direction.

Well mine arrived a few hours ago. Not feeling the love for it right now. The actual box is great but just getting it working properly with my network files is proving frustrating to say the least. Its not just me either the Boxee Box forum is full of people with the same issues.

Ill spend a bit mor etime playing with it before posting a proper review.

Well I've been playing with the thing for a day now and I'm still no closer to resolving my issues with the box. Very frustrating to say the least.

I know my network is fine because my xBox and Blu Ray player can hook up and stream all the shared files just fine. But when I tried to setup the Boxee Box it just kept on asking for username and password every time I tried to select the shared folders. After trawling the forums it seems this is a problem relating to Live Essentials 11. Great, I use Live Mesh. I uninstalled it anyway and then it would connect after entering a username and password.

Then I noticed that the folders were added but were showing as disconnected. Off I go trawling the forums again. It seems if this happens you have to enable the guest account on your PC and tell Boxee to use that, maybe its me being picky but I just don't like the extra guest logon when I boot up. but oh well I enable it. After that the folders now show as connected.

Not finished yet. Off I go to browse the file. And for some reason now its just not indexing them so they aren't being grouped under the nice menus of Music, Videos etc. Instead I have to navigate through the folder structure and play the files that way. Still to resolve this issue. Its bugging the hell out of me. I'm not alone with this and all of the other issues as well. To be honest I feel like a flaming beta tester right now. The product has so much potential, but right now it just shouldn't have been released. I'm debating whether to send it back or stick with it and wait for the updates which I'm promised by the Boxee forum admins will fix everyone's woes.
