Just reading on SNet about BPs' new fuel - Ultimate 102.

102 RON fuel for those with highly tuned engines. Theres a big speil about how great it is.

And the price - £2.42 per litre. Trialed in 9 places only.

Hope this hasn't been posted before - couldn't see it.

The sad fact is, within the years to come thats going to be normal price for a litre. What is 102 ron going to cost then, £5 a litre

You kid surely. I take it this is the real thing instead of bio ethanol stuff. Jetgas would be cheaper and better

I bet there are going to be some numpties who accidently fill up with it, and go balistic over the total price! If my car was a petrol, it would cost over £110 to fill up!

I imagine its probably aimed at the city banker with a load of ferraris and lambos that he will maybe put 2000 miles on a year so isn't too bothered about £120 a tank of fuel.

The rest of us will have to be content with Optimax.

But £2.42....dear god.

Surely that's just SUL loaded with octane boosters?

Either way I dont see how that's going to be a big seller. The only people who would be interested are going to be running big power track or drag strip cars. No one needs that for a daily driver and as mentioned it would simply be cheaper to get ordinary Optimax and add octane booster

I am imagining it will be at all the petrol stations near motor race circuits where the RACMSA rules state "Pump unleaded fuel only"

;)

Aye :D didn't there used to be a petrol station near donnington park that sold race fuel on the forecourt ?

Avgas is 100RON and contains lead which I don't think is allowed in road cars (correct me if I'm wrong).

It is allowed, but it's been restricted - leaded petrol must not make up more than 0.5% of total fuel sales in this country... very few places still sell leaded (www.leadedpetrol.co.uk).

It'll also screw the catalytic convertor fitted to most cars.

Very high octane fuel can be dangerous, possible cat damage for a start - as commented.

Also - high RON octane fuel can fail to vapourise instantly, leaving a lot of heat in the chamber at the wrong time. Melted pistons anyone? :p

I love the comment on BPs marketing material:
"On a very high performance, turbo-charged vehicle, with boost pressure increased, the power benefits seen included an increase in maximum power of 37bhp (8.6 per cent)"

Now my read of that is that if you increase the boost on an engine, that you get more power out of it. Just what has that got to do with the Octane of fuel? I know that you up the boost on an Impreza turbo that you'll get more power out of it. Talk about stating the bleeding obvious.

Perhaps what they mean is that the higher octane fuel allows greater boost without pinking?

Bit of a dodgy statement though.

I think an increase in boost increases the possibility of detonation, which higher octane fuel can help (I think).

I do hate the way they quote outlandish figures though. What are they based on? Surely quoting such figures is a bit dodgy as it massively varies between cars.

Just thinking about the power increase from BP.
An 8% increase resulting in +37hp means a starting point of 475.
Can anyone actually think of a car that has a turbo and 475hp?

Have to admit that I'm really struggling on that one. Some of the big Mercs and Audis maybe. Any guesses?
