Sorry if this thread isn't allowed - just looking for a little advice. Does anyone have braces on their teeth? What are they like to live with?

My bottom teeth are seriously overcrowded and have been that way since I was a wee nipper. Being young and stubborn, I refused any form of treatment for them. As they're getting increasingly hard to keep clean, I've decided to get them sorted. The orthodontist has told me I can either have a fixed brace top and bottom for 24 - 30 months or leave them be. As much as I want to get them done, it's a big commitment as it means persevering with a brace until I'm 20

Hey, think about being in your 30s and realising that you have a crowded gob full of manky teeth, what would you do about it then?

You either do it now and fix them, ot you don't do it at all and the problem detiriorates.

just think, when you are 20 you will have good teeth.

whats worse, a mouth that makes people look away when you smile, or a mouth with a brace in?

I have one tooth thats more forward than others and i had to have one of those big plastic removable braces. I gave up after a few months, i cant talk properly with it in, i always had to take it out to eat and it always gave me excess saliva. Id rather have the dodgy tooth than put up with looking/sounding like an idiot for 2 years than have a fixed brace for 3 years.

I had a brace when I was younger and they didn't bother me much...I got into a fight at school and he punched me in the mouth and his ring caught my brace and pulled it off a few teeth, my god that hurt lol, but you cant eat things like hard sweets, chewing gum, etc.....they are ok to live with tho...the only thing i found annoying was the little peice of wire over-hanging at the back every so often when they are tightened every so often lol

Go with the braces, you'll only regret it if you don't

These days they aren't too bad and it's better than having them when you're 25!

I don't have bad teeth but should have probably got braces when I was younger, and wished I had

Just think, braces for 2 years or bad teeth for the rest of your life.

Exactly....Go with the braces

i had braces for about 1-2 years when i was younger, so glad i got it done, as before i had a horrible overbight and bit the inside of my cheeks on a daily basis, they also were overcrowded. just gotta be careful when wearing them, no hard sweet, no coke as it stains the teeth, and clean regulary.

if you raelly dont like your teeth, and you know you wont like them in 10 years get them done now :)

I have also been thinking about this, but I was wondering if it was possible to have a brace on that you just wear at night? I remember at school, a couple of my friends always put them in before bed (I went to a boarding school lol).

I'm going to bring it up with my parents and see if they'll pay for it. :D

If I were you I'd go for the brace, they aren't as big a deal as they used to be e.g. associated with geeks etc. and like many have said its well worth doing it now for teeth you'll be happy with the rest of your life. If you're that bothered about the appearance, ask your dentist about Invisalign, which is clear plastic braces that are pretty much unnoticeable. Not a lot of dentists do them as they're only just starting to become popular over here, and you'd have to pay for it as well (about £2000 i think).

*nods*

i had them when i was i was school for 1/2 years and then a retainer afterwards, get it sorted, the sooner then better and i didn't find them annoying (the retainer was afterwards but you can take that out when you want so its not to bad)

I'm in a similar position, someone decided it would be fun to punch me in the teeth when I was out one night, and it has knocked one of my front teeth back a bit.

Not sure whether I need braces for it or whether it can just be given a whack back the other way, would be a hell of a lot easier if it could.

Ive had/have a scissor tooth on my bottom teeth since i was about 14ish. At the time i had the option of braces on the top and bottom teeth or leave it be (and possible get worse)

The orthodontist said that the tooth may grow sideways again, even after the braces and i may need 2 or 4 teeth taking out to properly sort it.

I opted to leave it be. Im now 23 and it doesnt cause any trouble, it hasnt been much different since i was about 17. I can clean it quite well and you cant see it when i smile. I dont smile with your bottom teeth anyway so what was the point.

However yours sound worse than mine, as mine is only one that you cant really see. In your case id say go for it as it may cause serious problems by the time your my age
