I'm using some old components but bought a new PSU and I don't get boot. I think it may be that it doesn't have the correct connectors.

Bought this: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/be-q...plus-gold-modular-power-supply-ca-130-bq.html

For this: https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/TUF-X299-MARK-2/

The mobo has both an 8 and a 4-pin power connector at the top which to connect I need to use a PCI/VGA cable from the PSU. Before I order another and return this can I get a double check? And maybe a spec for one that will work?

The board should boot / POST with just the 8pin 12V connector. You don't NEED to have the 4pin connector connected for boot.
That's what the manual suggests anyway.

Have you tried booting with just the 8pin connected?

That 4 pin socket on the motherboard is a 4 pin eatx12v_2 socket, it's not the same as a pcie power socket and the cables arent compatible. You do not need the 4pin eatx12_v2 cable to boot the board. Section 2.1.5 of the user manual https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA2066/TUF_X299_MARK2/E12906_TUF_X299_MARK2_UM_WEB.pdf
