brain teaser...

I have an Acer Aspire 1714 and it has a P4 3.4 HT with 1mb L2 cache... what socket would that be? and what is the best I could hope to upgrade it too??

Could be either 478 or 775 (3.4 was the highest on 478)

Have a look for a program made by lavalys called everest ultimate. The trial should tell you and if not try cpu-z.

Could download CPU-Z, it wil ltell you what socket it is on, and it's a really small download.

Is this a laptop?
I didn't think you could upgrade the cpu in laptops.

you can with this one... its not integrated onto the motherboard, but I have to admit its a bit, erm, big

either way you're going to have a limited upgrade path as s478 stopped at 3.4 iirc and even 775 stops at 3.8 and be wary of your cooling, the cooling you have was designed to cool what is already there and nothing else. You might find a different cpu overwhelms it.

you know what chipsets are yeah? - well 865 is primarlly a 478 chipset, but can be used on 775

Almost all laptops use the 478 I think.... Either way I wouldnt upgrade even if it is possible. I've seen far too many heat issues on 3.4 and less with laptops....
