Hi there

I fitted new calipers the other weekend, theyre shiney, new and lovely.

The current finish is silver which you can imagine will look dirty/patchy very quickly and will then end up corroded and scabby. I want to paint then whilst theyre in good condition and paint them black (nice consistent colour/finish) and it will hopefully prevent corrosion

Im thinking about using this

750* is obvious overkill but can you see any reasons why this wont work?

Should work fine, you can get caliper specific paint, however i'm sure its the same thing under a different label. I've painted my calipers in the past, makes them easier to keep clean and looks nice (if you choose a subtle colour!)

None at all IMO.

Heck, I had no problems at all with Halfords Toolbox Red spray paint on my LCRs Brembo's when I gave them a home-refurbishment.

I even re-printed the white vinyl "Brembo" decals before covering in high-temperature laquer (I have a vinyl cutter).

Obviously if you are going for a matt finish, then the lacquer is irrelevant anyway.

Hammerite smooth is all you need matey, worked on my cupra and wrx, both get a bit of a beating every now and then and still as red as the day they were painted.

I wouldn't recommend a matt finish on calipers, it will look scabby in no time at all.

Hammerite smooth works as long as you don't use the brakes hard. A friend tarmac rally car had this on the calipers and it softened a lot when the calipers got very hot and ended up with all sorts of scrapes and dirt embedded in the paint.

If i was you i would get tinned brake paint and a decent brush. A lot cleaner and neater, especially if you are painting them whilst they are on the car.

I did these chavtastic ones by sanding down all the original paint which in turn made it nice and smooth, then sprayed gold. Applied heatproof decals, then sprayed with clear over the top to protect the finish.

Did them off the car with the seals and pistons protected as best as possible. Hand painted on the car can end up looking terrible as you will struggle to clean them and paint some hidden bits.

Quite right. Either take them off or don't bother painting them.

Hand painting them always ends up looking a mess.

totally disassembling them takes a few minutes. when i had them off before i scrubbed all the dust and rust and crap off so the look better but theyll just corrode again

you cant even see them behind the wheels anyway but if theyre staying in nice condition then im happy

Bit of a thread revival, apologies

I am planning to give my 320d calipers a go over with some £6 Black Hammerite, if you’re going to need a wirebrush or something to get any crud or corrosion off, does you have to completely remove the calipers, inc line, which means bleeding? or can you just remove them and hang them somewhere?

better still is it really that bad painting whilst they are left on?

I would also like to know the answer to this question! In the very same situation and would prefer having to take them off as not the most mechanically minded
