brake Checked!

I agree, however the video shows that the person sped up then slammed on brakes. Hence my original point, surely they should take *some* responsibility and should be penalised for their dangerous actions. Imagine if they caused a pileup?

Lessons to be learned: don’t drive too close and don’t slam on brakes in front of lorry.

My issue here is that the car driver will probably carry on driving with the same attitude... believing that they did nothing wrong.
If they make a habit of brake checking people then being folded up by a wagon will probably put them off more than most other punishments.

Can something not run into the road after the driver speeds up? Of course it can. Whichever way you spin it the lorry was far too close.

I’m pretty sure that nothing ran out in the video. Nothing that warranted an emergency stop.

It could also have been a ‘crash for cash’ scenario...

Ok here's the footage. Although my guy is not perfect!

Or perhaps the driver of the car stopped because he thought there was something wrong with his car due to the driver behind flashing, trying to get his attention. In the end he was right....

The video did highlight too, the perennial question, of what camera you need to get to capture good night footage ?
since the dazzling was 50% the camera 'aperture' adjusting;
I've never understood why flashing on lorries is so slow versus an equivalent halogen bulb car, is that some mechanical aspect on the stalks ?

By ‘stopped’ you mean nearly caused a pileup by slamming brakes on? Would it be reasonable to stop like that given the scenario in the video?

Don’t get me wrong, I do agree that the lorry driver could have done more to prevent it.

^ I'll give you that, but I've had old dears (not deers) in front of me stop almost as fast because the car coming the other way has their full beam on.

Occasionally you get the driver who slams their brakes on whenever anyone comes the other way, full beam or not.

Such people shouldn't be driving. Or should at least have the forethought to not drive at night.

My Nan for instance is a pretty good driver in the day, but she gave up driving at night some time ago. If its dark we drive her instead.

That's a good shout Acme, very good of you. Up here in the Highlands when it's dark it's dark for miles with no street lighting, the oldies pooter around at 40 to 50mph. I guess they don't have a nice relative to drive for them.

To the OP, what was the punishment if any?

The video is private so can't see it but...

I'm a transport manager looking after artic drivers.
If the driver rear ended someone, it's his fault. Regardless of what the other driver was doing.

Your driver is the profissional, be either didn't leave enough of a gap, or didn't react, or both. Why the car in front slammed on the breaks is irrelevant, if your driver was doing his job properly he would have avoided the accident.

Brakes! :p

Break = To break something.
Break/broken brakes = To break your brakes / you have broken brakes.

*pedant mode off*

Hard to see exactly what happened without a video, but it sounds like the driver needs some re-education and possibly some help with his aggression. There's no place for someone to be driving a huge Artic with such an attitude and aggressive tailgating, flashing etc. The vast majority of Artic drivers seem to be pretty good, but there are also enough with serious issues, the worst being the aggressive ones in 50mph average speed limits that try to push you along or out of the way as they want to bounce off their 56mph limiter.

There should be ZERO comeback in my opinion, you either left enough space for the vehicle in front or you didn't.
Yes brake checking is a dick move but that's no excuse for being too close.

If you google brake check , it's not going to take long (for the brake checker) to find this thread - lol - not really surprising he took it down.

Amongst those of us that saw the video thought the concensus was 50:50

people have been prosecuted for brake checking, like, if you emergency stopped for a pheasant suddenly flying across the road, say.
or, the mercedes auto braking stopping for a metallised bag of crisps.
the bmw driver wasn't innocent.
