Brake fluid - I see the warning is right

Whilst replacing the clutch slave cylinder on the car a few days ago the new one was faulty an failed during bleeding. As such I had to then change it back, and due to frustration I wasn't as careful installing the old one as I was when installing the new one.

I got myself covered in brake fluid (same system as the brakes on this car) but got it all back together.

I had an interim sink wash afterwards but didn't wash my face, and hadn't realised I'd got some on my face.

Anyway... couple of days later I have a lovely chemical burn right between my eyebrows and it ******* hurts like hell. It'd gone second degree and I have been advised to do nothing other than keep it clean.

So - to all those out there who casually read warnings on chemical bottles - heed them. I didn't and now I'm in pain and look like part of my face is going to fall off.

That is all.

lol no it's a small blister between my eyebrows :p

hurts quite a bit though, I guess that means it's not damaged the skin too badly.

I have been completely covered in most car-based fluids at some point and never suffered from anything close to chemical burns, although I'm sure it could happen.

One thing I have noticed now though is that if I do get anything solventy on my hands - like petrol, brake cleaner (even acetone free stuff), brake fluid, gunk/detergents like it - the skin on my fingers goes white a few days later, goes almost hard and basically disintegrates. Not uncomfortable but it does look a bit odd! I now use barrier cream when I remember as well as gloves (as irritating as gloves are).

Had various liquids in my eyes over the years as well, I guess I've been lucky to get away with that!

Ah this would have probably been on my skin for several hours as I didn't realise it was there.

It was only the next morning I found the 'burn'.

My skin is quite sensitive at the best of times but this is just downright painful.

Blistering seems to have gone down a bit but it's really shiny - perhaps it's burst and is weeping. I hope so, it means it's healing.

Edit - yeah I'd recommend goggles. Changing clarkey's lower arm at the pod a while back I got some rust in my eye and was told to go to hospital in the end. I cried instead and it came out eventually.

ive had brake fluid soak into the arm of an overall and get to my skin

it peeled in patches. not just a tiny layer of skin, more like a mm worth.

i once got it in my eye, just a splash and it was instant 9 out of 10 for pain. panicked and washed it out a lot!

Odd, I was knelt in brake fluid for hours during that rear end swap after spilling it down my jeans, went a bit red and sore but was fine the next day. Do have a bit of dryness to the face after splashing petrol over it the other day though.
Ah the joys of working on cars :)

That really hurts lol, had it a few weeks ago changing my exhaust, couldn't cry it out though had to get my finger in there

I always wash brake fluid off ASAP, got some wipes in the garage which are great for cleaning your hands / arms.

Getting stuff like oil / brake fluid on yourself all the time is a fast track to dermatitis or worse.

Brake cleaner and cellulose thinners is where it's at for eye pain :( (Other than arc eye and chunks of rust etc.)

Never had a skin reaction to brake fluid, though it is one of the worse tasting fluids to be found in a cars systems.
