Brake Fluid - Issue?

Hi Folks,

Whilst driving to my inlaws last night, when going over a speed bump, the car beeped, and the displayed advised me to 'Stop' and then a further message came up saying 'Brake Fluid'.

Luckily I wasn't far from their house, but after about 10 seconds, the warning stopped, so when I got parked, I popped the bonnet to check the fluid.

The fluid was just above minimum, so at first I thought it must just have been the speed bump had set off the sensor.

But what I did notice was the sound of gas/air escaping from where the brake fluid container is on the car. I wasn't sure whether this is/was normal.

So, I topped up the brake fluid to the maximum level, and drove home without any problem

When I got home, I checked the fluid level, and it was the same, there is no sign of leaking from the unit, or anywhere under the bonnet. The only fluid I found was on the plastic cover under the front of the car, but I can't be sure whether that is just oil from when the garage recently changed the sump.

The gas/air escaping noise was still present, although this noise subsides after about 3 minutes of the engine being turned off.

Any idea what is going on, and if I have problem?

Thanks :D

P.S. It's a VW Passat Estate

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Check the vacuum line going to the servo

I take it that will be the rubber hose going into the fluid housing?

I'm assuming it isn't safe to drive with a vacuum leak?!

As you probably guessed, I'm no mechanic! :)

Personally I wouldn't like to drive any car I knew had a brake issue, however the worst that is likely to happen is you lose servo assistance.

Read as you have to put your bodyweight on the pedal to stop the car :p

Argh lol.

How easy is it to replace the vacuum tubing? Is it a DIY job, or will it need to go to a garage?

If so, any idea how much it will cost to replace?

Well I've spent the past hour trying to source the air leak, with no luck.

I'm just wondering whether the vacuum hose should be attached to the brake fluid housing with a jubilee clip?
