It's probably sticking,there's a thin wire that connects to a pin in the switch,when you press the lever it pulls the wire and the pin and the brake lights up
Give it a good clean and wd40 it first,see if that helps
Clean the pivot for the pedal as well, mine gets full of crap and needs a good rinsing with brake cleaner while working the pedal for a bit to rise out any muck then give it a good squirt of oil again while working the pedal.
Also check the switch itself - my front brake switch broke, the actual mounting had cracked meaning when the lever was pressing on it it was pushing it away rather than pushing the switch in. You'll find it's probably the same part used on 10's of different bike, mine is used on current year fireblades and probably everything in between
