Brake noise - Issue?

Today i started the car as usual for the travel to work however when i brake, i get a grinding noise from the passanger side rear wheel.

The noise is difficult to explain, sounds like grinding but a catching grid, not solid grinding noise.

I spoke to a mate who know how to take a car wheel off (i struggle, not my thing getting my hands dirty lol) and he suggested it could be grit. Any idea on how to test, he is now gone for the weekend and i didnt ask him on how i could find out if it actually was, i presume just driving it and it will clear?

My friends XKR had an issue with this in the works carpark last year, he got some grit stuck behind the disk and against the back guard, simply went in forwards then reverse for a bit, pushed the guard back slightly and the grit dropped out.

Or it could be the fact your brake pads are low and its time to change them!

astra 1.6, back drums, front disks.

Checked the disks before MOT and had a good 10k left on them (so i was told) but both inside and out seemed thick. Drums however unsure.

Last night was fine when i parked up. As soon as i reversed this morning i heard it.

Could be a bit of grit or rubbish within the drums - Might pay for you to take them off and check. Also with the drums you can end up with a lip round the edge that just gets bigger and bigger the more they wear out, its worth checking that the pad isn't grinding against this.

Sounds like brake shoe dust in the drum to me. Made worse by the cold and damp lately. Best thing is to whip the drums off and blow the dust out with some compressed air if you can (there may a lot of dust come out, try not to breath it in!)

thanks everyone, if its not icey tomorrow i will give it a bash!

I was actually going to OCUK so might see how it goes for a few miles.

thanks again, appreciated.
