Brake squeak - where from?!

Hi,

I have a Peugeot Expert van with rear drums and no ABS. I've had this problem in many cars and never bothered to look into it but now I'm getting fed up.

The problem is every time I release the brakes I hear a little sqeak from the rear brakes. Its not a continuous noise it only lasts as long as it takes to fully release the pedal. It only happens after a period of dry weather and goes away with the slightest hint of rainy weather.

Normally I'd just think something needs lubing in the drum assembly but:

a) It doesn't make the squeak if I pull the handbrake up and down - surely if it was some part of the drum it would sqeak when releasing the handbrake too?

b) If I have the handbrake applied and press/release the brake pedal it is silent?

Any ideas appreciated! Perhaps something in the load balancing valve? I have no idea how these work - are they not hydraulic or do they have moving parts too?

Thanks

so temped to say.. "the brakes" Boom tish

Could indeed be the load balancing valve return spring. they get crusted up and loose quite easily.
It's a big external spring acting on a lever on the end of the balance valve.
A good smearing of grease on it should shut it up.
