Hi

i just got my new leadtek 7800gt from OcUK today.
i took out my 6600gt and put in the 7800gt but there is a problem.
in windows it seems fine (i'm using it to type this) but when i start up a 3d application/game etc it works for a minute or so than gives a garbbled screen and freezes, so i have to reset.

the power lead is plugged in and my psu is a akasa 460w. the temp only seems to get upto 60 degrees

i'm not sure what to do

any ideas????

thanks a lot

it seems to be related to temperature - if i run the usual hdr demo and watch the temperature, the problems appear around 55 degrees. if i quickly stop the test before it freezes and allow it to cool, and then run the test again it goes bad when it gets up to temperature again.

i did a quick test with the core downclocked to 350 and still the same problem.

ideas?

Is the fan working? Can you hear it and see is spinning? 60 degrees or so is more than fine. You'd have to get into the 80s at least before you started running into real problems due to heat.

If it's not that then I really have no idea. Test it in another computer if you can.

yep - fans working, and the pc is fine in windows while i'm watching 8 out of 10 cats ;)

its only when i do any 3d stuff and it starts to warm up

unfortunately i don't have another pci express pc i can test it in.

i wonder if anyone knows if its something to do with voltage - if the card is not getting enough voltage would it do this? i would assume that it wouldn't go into 3d at all but i don't know.

i can't suggest anything other than just going down the list of possibilities...drivers, power, voltage, software conflicts etc. If nothing works and you can't retest on a different machine, then you'll have to return it.

i've just tried some different drivers - no luck.

i have a multitester somewhere so i'll test the power lead that came with the card and maybe i'll try the card without the extra power cable plugged in to compare the results - but i'll do that tomorrow, i think i'll go to sleep instead.

at least ocuk are open on saturdays so i can ring them up and maybe they will have some ideas.

thanks anyway

Hi, had a similar problem when moving from 6800gt to 7800gt. A full format did it for me. Some IRQ or nVidia driver corruption. If you havent formatted for a while youll get a nice little speed boost for a period of time so it kills two birds with one stone.

well, its a new morning and i had a craps night sleep - its amazing how something so insignificant as a new graphics card can strees me out so much :)

so i tried without the power lead plugged in and the card detected that it wasn't getting enough voltage and ran at a low speed - the 3d demo then worked fine for 30 mins but the temp didn't go over 39 degrees either.

anyway, i managed to get through to ocuk technical and the guy seemed pretty sure it was faulty memory on the card and that they have seen this sort of thing before - so its going back on monday and i hope he's right and the next one works perfectly

thanks for all your help.

well, i got a replacement today and................PHEW, it works (so far anyway;) ).

i'm pretty relieved that its not a problem with my pc and that it was a real fault.
