BRAS profile changes - is there a time of day this occurs?

I am wondering, for bras profile *increases* (not decreases), is there a certain time of day that this occurs - ie. does BT check at 10am each day to see what speed you are synced at or something. It seems hard to find specific info on the exact mechanism they use to increase your bras rate.

I remember reading (whether it was true or not) that BT check your sync speed during the night, every day - but obviously many people will turn their PC and ADSL modem off overnight so there must be another way that BT work it out, for those people :)

It could happen at any time - it isn't a scheduled event.

It isn't true. When you connect, it generates "sync events", which are all stored.

The reason I want to know this is because my line is only good for 1.5 overnight but can do 2.5 during the day and evening. What I've done so far is stayed connected at 1.5 24/7. But I'm wondering whether I could choose to connect at 2.5 and get the higher profile each day (I can choose my sync speed by capping my router). For that to be possible, it would need to generate a 2500 bras each day, or at least not reduce it to 1500 just because I sync lower at night. My line is not interleaved so I'm hoping that speed increases will take effect quickly.

I don't know if any of that makes sense... it is something I'm going to try anyway.

Don't generate 1500kbps sync events. That's the only way to make sure your profile doesn't drop.

Sync events aren't daily, or hourly, or anything like that. It's every time you sync up.

Yeah I know that the sure-fire way to achieve it is to turn the router off overnight so that it only ever syncs at 2848. It would mean no overnight uncapped p2p though :)

As BRAS profile changes can take up to 3 days, it doesn't make sense to keep faffing around with the router to get 1.5 and 2.5mbit at different times. You're better off just leaving it at 1.5.

It's not much faffing around - it takes a couple of seconds to open up the DMT software, put in a new speed then click to apply and reboot the router. If I can get an extra 67% or 120KB/sec of speed just for the sake of doing that, then it's worth it when my line isn't very fast to begin with due to its long distance from the exchange.

Fair enough, but BRAS profile changes can take up to 3 days - by which time your router would've resynced a few times anyway. Granted it doesn't always take that long but it can do.

Do we know why it takes so long to go back up again? (I mean, why have BT chosen to make it that way) Wouldn't it be better if it just gave you a profile that fits your current sync speed, with no waiting period?

I just found out about the new BRAS profiles being introduced at the end of the month - the new 1750 one should be handy for me for 24/7, if my other plans don't work out.

If you can get service from any of the LLUers, they don't bother with profiles at all.

To keep the amount of data they have to process manageable - there's already the sticky profile issue (which is suspected to be a faulty database transaction). Having profiles that could flap up and down all over the place would make that problem even worse.

The ideal would be to not have a profile at all, but that would mean doing away with ATM from ISP to end user.

How does LLU work if they don't use profiles then?

I'm starting to think that I might be best off going onto a fixed 2Mb service - the only downside being the lower upload speed which would be disappointing. It's a shame because I used to be able to get 2Mb solid 24/7 with MAX until recently and I have no idea why I can't now... oh well.

Hi dirtydog where did you see that.

There are 4 new ones being added at the end of the month :

350Kbps
750Kbps
1250Kbps
1750Kbps

Should reduce the dramatic impact of relatively small changes in sync at the slower end of the scale.
