Hi, does anybody know what exactly is the situation with the Bravia being used as a monitor?

I tried before using it as a monitor when I was using an HD3870 and could only get some strange low resolution option. At the time I couldn't be bothered trying to work it out and put it down to the 3870 being limited.

Anyway, I've just stuck in an HD4870 and I'm considering the option again. To save myself any needless hassle, can anybody tell me if it is possible to use this with a 1920x1200 resolution or something else respectable and how I can achieve it?

Many thanks

You don't indicate which model of 26" Bravia you have (the Sony site shows three models that size) but all of them have a native resolution of 1366x768 (normal for a 720p TV).

You may be able to feed in a 1920x1080 resolution as a 1080i picture but that will be downscaled by the TV and look very poor. You'd be best to use the native resolution above. If you want to run 1080p resolution then you need a screen which supports that, which will probably be bigger, as LCD TV's tend to have lower resolutions than LCD monitors.

One thing I will add that on one of my HTPCs connecting over HDMI only gave 1280x800 on one HDMI port, which looked appalling, but just switching to another port meant that the native resolution became available and it looks a lot better.

I'm not sure which model it is. It's tucked away as there's no use for it at the minute.

Seems like it'd be a pointless move trying to use it as a monitor because it would be used mostly for gaming.

Can higher resolutions be forced? If so, is it dangerous to do?
