The former Corinthians hero was rushed to hospital in Sao Paulo on Thursday night with a suspected case of food poisoning, but was immediately placed in intensive care after it was discovered that he had suffered a septic shock, in which bacteria from an infection seeps into the bloodstream and spreads throughout the body.

A true legend of football. I remember watching him in a couple of World Cups very well.

After the world cup of 82, playing football from there on in... Allways ' Socrates ' shouted to myself in my head when i scored a goal or did something special.

First footballer that inspired me, the first in my time of briliant brazilians thats trickled down the years.

One more hero of a generation, rest up great fella.

Before my time to watch live, but what a player. He's one of the main reasons everyone still assumes Brazil are going to play "samba football" every World Cup.

Remember watching him when i was growing up, one of the main reasons why i love Brazil as a football team.

Fantastic player, never realised he was a fully qualified doctor and didn't really start playing until after his studies. Just imagine how much better he could have been with modern day training from a young age. RIP.

I only read about him going into hospital at lunchtime. He was one of the greats of his generation. Sad news.
