I was shopping yesterday and staring at the massive range of different loaves available over here. This normally wouldn't be an issue but, its all truly rubbish. The loaves are small, full of sugar and way too expensive. To be honest tesco value bread is better than most of it. I would kill for a loaf of Warburton's Toasty right now.

Its nearly 2 years since i had some and there's nothing better for beans, poached egg etc on toast. Looks like i might have to invest in a decent bread maker.

I take it you've seen the bread baking thread on here. You really can make it a lot better yourself, especially compared to American bread! That said, you seemed to be able to buy very good bread in New York, I was very impressed indeed.

I couldn't believe the bread in the US, they've got nothing on what we have over here. Can't understand why they don't have a basic decent loaf. Everything is long, thin, light and sweet.

Some of it makes really nice sandwiches, especially the German style breads - but you're right about nothing for a poached egg on toast etc.

Depends entirely where you shop, I go to Market of Choice and there is some very good bread, similar at Fred Meyers and Wholefood Market.

Don't touch any of the pre-sliced packaged bread, get the fresh baked artisan bread. TBH, it is much better bead than you can get from any standard UK supermarket.

I never eat any mass produced, bleached flour, pre-sliced stuff so these may well be worse in the US.

Yeah US bread is total ass unless you have a Trader Joes or Whole Foods or something that does 'artisan bread' :p

I'm amazed by this because whenever I watch american shows on tv and they're eating (say) a PBJ sandwich I always look at it longingly and think 'why can't I get bread that looks like that' Maybe I'm doing it wrong. I do like a slice of Toastie though!

Been making my own for a couple of months now and I have to say my bread is flipping awesome! Took me a few goes to get the feel for it but once I got it the bread comes out great everytime. The more you understand it the more you want to experiment with different flavours, types and flours etc.

Both my partner and I look forward to making bread once or twice a week.

I don't even look at the supermarket bread anymore. Oh, and it works out much cheaper, too.
