Break in Edinburgh

So Ive booked a little break in Edinburgh for me and the missus.
Can anyone recommend any decent places to go to?
We'll be taking one of those tour guide busses to Loch Lomond and Stirling Castle for the day, but I was thinking about the things to go and see in Edinburgh itself. So any suggestions more than welcome :)

(Weve put down Edinburgh castle and possibly the botannical gardens?)
Oh and any decent night out (possibly some kind of cabaret or some kind of comedy act or theatre perhaps? Failing that, any decent clubs :))

Look up Rabbies Trail Burners tours for that tour. :)

As for Edinburgh itself - take a sightseeing tour of Edinburgh. Tickets valid for 24 hours from purchase time. Four tours available. £10 for one, or £13 for all four (they all take slightly different routes but most cover similar ground). Once you've done that, you'll have a list of things to go see. :)

Anyway: Castle, Holyroodhouse (if the Queen isn't in residence), Royal Yacht Britannia, Dynamic Earth, Zoo, Scottish Parliament (if you must, free, take my advice and skip the £6 tour), Museums aplenty (most free), Botanic Gardens, High Kirk of St. Giles (a.k.a. St. Giles Cathedral), etc. You'll not be wanting for things to do. :)

As for evening entertainment, one thing Edinburgh is definitely not short of is pubs, and a few clubs thrown in to boot. Edinburgh does have a few theatres, though I don't know what's on. :)

PS - I'm not local - I just got back from a holiday there. :)

my mate said before that the Edinburgh dungeon was decent although he broke off from the tour group and jumped out on them at some points :)

princess street gardens is good just avoid the dodgy toilets and avoid the graveyard next to it as that's where druggies hang out :)

there is lots of nice pubs in Edinburgh but i do not know what ones to avoid as i mainly drink in my house :)

Looks familiar :D :p You missed Mary Kings Close though, well worth a visit if its raining. Definitely see the castle too, and think about the audio tour :)

Edinburgh Dungeon is Ok, but i think theres better to see before it, if you want a Dugeon go to London :p.

The vaults tour and Mary Kings Close are awesome, Royal Yacht Britannia came runner up in some tourist award some time in the past i remember. Castle is just awesome.
 
I walked past it several times. Looked tacky so I kept on walking.

Forgot about Mary Kings Close. Much better than some fake dungeon place IMO. If you believe, then you'll certainly come out of there a little paler than you went in. :D

And yes, the Castle's Audio Tour is worth the money.
 
Mary Kings close is ok, bit boring with the guide.
I had a some nice evenings at Hooters mind :D but dont think ya misses will
Gardens are all right if you've reached that age to appreciate them.
Plenty of pubs and grub houses day and night.
And of course the castle - not overly impressive but deinately worthy of a visit
Check to see if Hibs are playing at home too.

PS Plenty of shopping to be had
 
Stand Comedy Club

You should hold out until the fringe festival starts. Loads and loads of comedy etc will be showing plus a lot of pubs will get a late license open until 5am.

Fringe

Museum of Scotland is still open and quite good but the Royal Museum that is part of the same building is going through building work so closed.
 
If your looking for a good night out there is Lava and Ignite (aka The Cavandish) and the Jam House which might more upo your street.

I have heard good things about the Opal Lounge but havent been there myself.

I was a regular at Opal lounge almost every Wednesday last year (embarrassingly but my friend had a black card :o). Great place, a little expensive but its on George street, and its all full of people that probably don't really care about the prices (apart from me :p). Possibly a little snobbish having over the national average or "rahs".

Medina will be great for AcousticEdinburgh around the festival/fringe, some great acts lined up on tuesdays (i think).
